Why did men go to war before but now cry over girls instead?

Let's be honest, probably 80-90% of the 'women' who lived back then, through a world war were probably stronger and braver than most young guys are nowadays...
Men were better men back then, I'll even go as far to say, better than myself and my generation...
Society has done it, can't smack ya kid anymore if they're misbehaving or break stuff these days otherwise the parents get sued by their kids or in trouble with the law.
Men back then got belted, even thumped for lesser bad behaviour so they learnt discipline.
