How can I tell the difference between if a guy is being a jerk or is teasing me?

I saw another post with someone asking the difference between teasing flirting and teasing platonically, but I'm having the opposite situation. How does one tell the difference between someone blatantly being a jerk and passing it off as a joke or genuinely teasing?

Maybe this can also help others too. I'm a bit oblivious.

How did you feel when he said it? That's the difference. If it didn't feel good, he's probably a jerk. However, I teased someone once about something I thought the were totally secure about. They weren't and were really hurt. I was better after I explained that I was really trying to pay a compliment, but I still felt bad.

Based on their tone and body language, it's hard for me to tell whether it’s a must-have or not. I believe it depends on their tone and body language.

Is he smirking? If he's smirking he's teasing you. If he keeps as straight face he's being a jerk.

Tone, inflection, context, his actions. If you can't tell the difference he probably doesn't know how to flirt or you can't read people
