LOL this happened to my friend. She had a little thing with him, and then she text him and he had said, "sorry who is this?" She had basically had the mentality, "he doesn't remember me, f*** it" and didn't respond again. Then a few hours later he text and said, "oooh (insert name) sorry I forgot, how are you?" or some sh*t.
It's the guy trying to do that "oooh I'm a bad boy/jerk, girls want me" BS. If women stopped buying into it, like my friend did, then maybe, just maybe, they'd stop thinking it works.
I'm also wondering why guys do this. Maybe to not seem creepy or something? Because I just had a guy do that to me by saying "I was just tell, um, this girl right here" (me) and then my friend laughed and teased him about not knowing my name, yet he immediately said my name and then he used it a lot during the conversation. If I don't know someone's name, I just don't say it and pretend to know. :P
sometimes if its a girl I haven't seen a long time that I'm crushing over.
mainly for she won't try to sense that I've been thinking about her constantly between that long stretch of time, and for she won't label me as a geeky nervous guy that has a big crush on her.
dumb, I know, but I'm starting to find out that some girls like it when you remember them or some of the things they did in the past.
I forget people's names all the time, no joke. Maybe he's playing a game or maybe he's not. You have to sense his personality on this one. Absent-minded people (such as myself) are always concerned with other things, and we really don't care about remembering anyone's name.

I never pretend to forget a person's name. It happens naturally.
Some just forget, unfortunately. And some do it because they may find humor in doing so.
