How would you feel if your girlfriend told you she wanted to be a housewife?

Do you think that marriages with the wife staying at home and the husband working are better than both working and both maintaining the house/kids?

Let her? Hrmm... Well, none of my friends are my children so I don't let or disallow them to make life choices. Of course, if that is what my own daughter wanted to do when she grows up, I still wouldn't be a position to make her choices for her. The only person I have that much control over is myself.

As for your disapproval, I can tell you hands down...being a mom and taking care of the house is *hard work* and very rewarding. Yeah, there are a lot of amazing things to do in this world, but trust me...theres something amazing about being able to raise well behaved kids who become productive members of society, and keep a household running smoothly. Look around you...if it was easy, everyone would have well behaved kids, a well kept home and a great home life. But that's not the case at all..its..*hard!*

That being said...I was a housewife for the first 6 months of my marriage, and one day when my husband came home from work...baby all happy and bouncy, laundry all done, house tidy, dinner on the table, bills and such not a concern cause I had a handle on everything in the household...I told him, I'm getting a job or one of us is going to die. LoL! Seriously...I was up at 6 passed out by 9, no time to myself at all. There's *always* something to do...jsut when you think everything is done, something else comes up. I don't know for the life of me how anyone with more than one child does it! But me, I needed to get the heck away...out of the house, and recollect myself.

My path led to me being single work at home mom...and though kiddo is older and she's at school all day, its *hard!* Anyone who tells me that what I'm doing isn't amazing, or that I could be doing something better with my life can tell it to someone else. My kid is my pride and joy...very sweet, good in school, respectful and mannerly...my home is tidy, bills are paid, I'm on top of everything..I work hard at it, and I'm proud to be where I am and see the positive influence I have on my child from being home with her. I'm very happy now that I ended up being a stay at home mom anyway...

There is nothing wrong with being a stay at home mom and for those who actually takes her job seriously (Im not talking about the house is trashed, watching jerry springer, kids are bad arse and the fort is falling apart at the seams types...but honest to goodness homemakers) then my hats off to them...very admirable, especially in this day and age when people care less when they should be caring more. It all begins at home afterall...

Oh yeah, I know it's hard. My sister and I are from a "broken home" so we didn't have a good upbringing and we were well mannered and never got in trouble at school or elsewhere. We don't drink, smoke, we're both virgins until marriage, and we're hard working. But it's funny how we both turned out so opposite. She wants to be a stay at home mom and I want to be a career woman that gets to travel the world. I guess I'm a little selfish for that because I would never want to be a stay at home mom.

Yeah..dont confuse what you want for what your sister wants...you can't live her life for her. If its any consolation, your upbringing may make her a fantastic stay at home mom esp since she has her heart set. I came from a crap childhood...the few who know anything (and none know all) are floored that I'm not a drugged up basketcase. Thing is...I am to my kid the mom I wished mine was to me. When kiddo gives me hugs & kisses just cause she wants to, that is the most amazing feeling ever! =)

she needs some fulfillment other than running a home and taking care of children. shell realize that once the kids go to school. hopefully when that change comes, her marriage will be able to accomodate the change.

Statistically, households where both parents are married raise children who are less likely to get pregnant before marriage, get involved with drugs or alcohol, or commit crimes. I firmly believe that a woman that decides she wants to be a homemaker and raise her children is a well-grounded woman who cares about the future and welfare of her family.

Now don't get me wrong -- the husband has got to do his part, too. He can't just let the mom be the only disciplinarian or be the only one spending good quality time with the kids. I think the only time a guy would have a problem with a wife that doesn't want to work is if he doesn't have any marketable skills to get a job with which he can support a family. I was kind of in that place when we got married, so my wife had to work, but I eventually moved into a job where I could make a better and more steady income, and she doesn't have to work now.

If you're thinking in this direction, I commend you on your decision. But make sure you marry a man with a good job that can support you and him, and spend a couple of years married together before you have children. Trust me, if you take the time to build that foundation between you both, your marriage will be stronger, and your kids will see that as they grow older.

No, actually I'm thinking in the opposite direction, but my sister want to go in that direction.

Her biggest dream is to be a housewife, but I'm like "Why?! Out of all the amazing things you're capable of doing in this life?!", but I guess that is an amazing thing for her.

Question asker, Just consider what an amazing and wonderful mother she could be and all the really cool things she could teach her kids. Making a family involves sacrifices from both husband and wife (and kids), the key is to find a balance that maximizes everybody's happiness and meets everybody's needs the best.

There is nothing wrong with a woman staying home, and there is nothing wrong with a woman having a career. My wife was a biology major and has a wide diversity of interests, but she has also decided to stay at home with our children full time. With respect to having kids in the home, I do think it is better to have someone home fulltime--I can't even imagine how difficult it would be to keep up our house and take care of our kids if we both worked and got home late. Keeping up a house and taking care of kids is a big, time consuming, if occasionally mundane, job. My marriage is great for whatever that is worth.

I would let her do whatever she wants, but if we are not financially comfortable then we would have to find an alternative way of doing things. For Example I would probably work the night shift and let her work the day shift. That kind of stuff.

Good luck unless you make tons of money she will need to get a job. Depending on how things go she might even decide to find someone who makes enough money to suport her. I would try to encourge her to go out there and get a job!

It depends on th people. For example, I am an excellent cook and a thrifty shopper. So it would only be logical for me to assume these duties. But different people have different earning posers, and that plays a role.
