When a guy you like says, "there are better guys than me out there" what does it mean?

So I complimented a guy I currently like a lot by saying that he was one of the nicest and best guys I know and he responded by saying "you'll meet nicer and better guys than me when you go off to college" (I just graduated while he's going into his senior year). My question is, is he saying this because he's not interested in me and wants to point out that there are other guys, or is he trying to see how interested I am in him by seeing what my response would be?

probably because he does like you but does not want to limit your options when you go off to college. I say continue being friends with him and see what, if anything pans out in the future. this way you have a great friend who obviously has your best interest at heart and if it is going to work out romantically for you in the future it will be his choice.

He is doubting that you and him could ever be (he is insecure). He thinks once you enter college you will forget all about him, and will meet better guys than him. He does want you, but he doesn't think he will have you for long. Reassure him that isn't the truth.

It may be just an excuse, but it can also be sincere, saying that he has some issues he needs to deal with that he doesn't want to cause problems in the relationship.
