What's the deal with army guys?

Question

There are some girls that I have hung out with the past. I wasn't expecting anything with them, but one night when me and my roommate were taking these girls out on the town, they just blurted out "where are the hot army guys? this is so lame, blah blah blah" and well, that just made me feel like shit being some f***ing nobody compared to an "army guy"

So what's the attraction? men in uniform? really? Do I just need to wear a costume in order for some hot girl to find me attractive?

Then, last night, the same thing happened again. I guess serving in a pointless "war on terror" must be super attractive!

I know I sound jealous, and I am. It hurts when something so superficial as being in the army can outdo my whole f***ing personality when trying to find a girlfriend.

I know this is a late entry into this discussion, but I found this thread while doing a little browsing. All I have to say is man, you are so off base.

First of all, there is nothing superficial about deciding to serve in the armed forces. It is a huge decision that, when made well at least, takes a lot of will power, courage and commitment. The uniform is not a costume, it is an honor and a symbol of accomplishment. Many people join the armed forces merely as a job or a stepping stone, but you can't deny that they are still making a large sacrifice for their country. Whether the war is wrong or right is mostly irrelevant because your average soldier doesn't call those kind of shots and his job is still to promote order and the safety of foreign civillians while overseas. The military instills values and discipline into its members and they are some of the most highly trained professionals in their fields. Only 1% of the U.S. population has what it takes to serve in the military and that alone should tell you something.

You keep talking about how great you think you are in comparison to Army people but that is not what I read out of your comments. I have no idea what kind of girls you are interacting with that this would be a constant problem for you in the first place, most people are not that shallow. You are claiming that your personality is worth while but your comments make you appear to be petty, jealous, infirm and self centered. Let me tell you something you should already know. Sure some girls have a thing for Army guys, but if you were as great as you think you are that wouldn't be a problem for you.

The short version: The problem is YOU, my friend, and the girls you hang out with. Think about taking accountability for yourself before you bad mouth professionals who lay down their lives for this country. As if it's THEIR fault you can't attract a woman.

Sorry to present my opinion so bluntly but your comments are offensive. I guess my nice version would still be, "don't worry about guys in the Army, work on your own life and things will come to you as you truly deserve them."

Yea I agree, its ridiculous and I've been in a similar situation.

I just don't get what is so attractive about following orders and being trained to kill others. war never makes sense. Obviously I agree with being able to protect your country and save/protect innocent lives but by that same "protective" logic, where is all the love for scientists discovering better ways to create energy, geologist studying earthquakes/natural disasters, or doctors finding the cure to HIV/Cancer? these people are usually labeled as nerds but they are doing just as important work. IMO movies/media glorify this stereotype about uniformed men beyond comprehension.

many guys I know in the army/military/navy/Airforce are crazy, rash, insecure, and ignorant, and all of them have a REALLY short fuse, anything can cause a full blown fist fight in the right circumstance.

Please don't think I have disrespect for everyone in uniform, I have the utmost respect for anyone who puts there lives on the line for others well being. including police officers, obviously. But the ONLY! reason I see that this makes sense is that guys in the forces are FORCED to be physically fit. What if everyone in the world had to pass basic training/be healthy/fit...?

I am guilty for having a "thing" for army guys. They are the most amazing poeple you will ever meet. Its not just that they are fit, it's that they are putting their own life on the line and working for low wages for a cause that they may, or may not believe in. They are fighting because they believe their duty is to servere their nation and have the most courage I have ever seen in an human being.

If you ever talk to someone who has served, you will see it too. The stories they tell are unreal and heat-warming at the same time. They have more self-confidence and know personal value. I have heard stories of people who have literally seen life flash before their eyes, and they learn to cherish every moment they have with people they cherish. I have a friend who is currently serving and everything he says is like he's thinking he won't come back, but he will die proud if he did.

Army guys aren't for everyone though. They carry A LOT of personal baggage and many little things tick them off. Yes men in uniform are more well respected, than your average Billy-Bob-Joe but that is not to say men who are not in uniform are not bad either.

Most ladies want a man that they known have the power to protect them, and know have to stand up for what they believe in. I also think ladies like someone with a little sculpting (muscule)- I am personally not into guys that are like walking string-beans.

It's mostly a personal prefrence, I guess. Plus, woman are intrigued by someone who has seen more they they have and are interested in their stories. Just my 2-cents.

In all seriousness though, generally if a girl has an interest in soldiers, they are just looking at their physical appearance. I used to have a thing for marines and soldiers whenever I was younger, but whenever I would talk to one of them, they were really disrespectful to me and arrogant. I believe I was just imagining them as my uncle, he's a retired gunny sergeant from the marine corps and served for 20 years, my father, he's a retired sergeant from the army and served for 21 years, and my cousin, he is currently a staff sergeant in the army and has been serving for 13 years now and aiming for his 20 years, and neglected to see that it was not the same (I also intend to go into the air force as a cryptological linguist and figured it would just be easier to get involved with another military personnel). Now I'm dating a welder and could not be any more happy.
Usually the one with the better attitude wins the girl at the end of the day.

What the heck are you talking about?  I've never met any girls who would just randomly blurt that out.  I have never had any specific preference for an "army guy."  It is all about the individual.  My advice: stop hanging out with these girls and many of us are not like this, if at all.

But think of it like this, they sign up their lives, their limbs and distance themselves from their families, friends to serve the government of their own country thinking that what they do is in the best interest of that country. For what? A mediocre salary of 50 maybe 60 thousand a year? Is it worth sacrificing your life for money, dueling a cause that has lost its meaning years ago. Sure soldiers will tell you that it does have cause, I agree, saving foreign civilians, killing the bad guys, making the world a better place by doing these actions... sure in their frame of mind they think what they do serves a greater purpose. to me, they are peons to the government and are drones to do whatever they want them to do. think back to WW 1 and 2.

What you should do is work on your self-esteem. Your worth, personal value. raise it and don't ever feel that you're "somebody" think that you ARE somebody, someone important. And reflect that. There is more to being a man than to be a "hero". All those soldiers who die for their "cause", they aren't heroes, they are simply brave soldiers who actually willed themselves to potentially die in another country to serve their own, Simply put.

A guy steps on a landmine. He dies. Comes back to America, everyone calls him a hero. (wheres the logic...)

For what, to risk his life which he did for a modest salary and to get fit. So If that's what defines a hero, risk yourself and put yourself out there, and value yourself higher than what those girls think of "hot army guys" and raise your confidence. You may not wear the costume, but you don't have to to get the girls.

as a girl who is into some men in the military, it is usually based on courage and assertiveness. it 100% depends on where he is ranked and what his personality is like. I have a pretty brave dad who could do everything/did everything for me (building things, car problems, I get stranded somewhere).. he's always there so i tend to find that in the guys i talk to. i like a guy who is driven, healthy, built, takes action when he needs to, can handle anything i do (usually fun), and can control their emotions. all of these traits i have found so far to be from people in the military who have higher positions and are better than the average person in there (i can't speak for everyone). i just like a guy who can lead but still know when not to piss me off, can take care of me with what he's good at, isn't a hard rock, and is generally/emotionally responsible. a lot of guys in todays society lack all of these things - they want to be treated like the girl because they crave a more welcome place on this earth i guess but that's just not how it works. you get what you put out. if you're lazy, drinking or doing drugs all of the time, dumb, unhealthy, a prick, and you treat girls so mid... theyre not gonna want you. if you are still pretty hard working, attractve, and have a few of the characterstcs i named above but still not getting any.. its definitely the conversation you're making and try being less insecure, it shows from a mile away. be more assertive but not creepy, maybe make some friends that are strictly girls to get some advice when trying to make a move with a girl.

Hmm well, myself personally, I find military men attractive due to them being able to complete physical and mental tasks adeptly under stressful conditions that I could never fathom. I can agree completely with you, not all army guys are particularly that nice. Where I studied at uni, the base was close by, many of the army guys were decent, but many were also unnecessarily aggressive and arrogant starting fights over trivial things.

Maybe it is different in each country also, this is in Australia I am referring to. The airforce guys seemed to be the most considerate. HOWEVER possibly the most perfect gentleman I have ever met or will ever meet served as rifleman, walked me to my door after returning from uni club expecting nothing in return. Which in itself is lovely and noble seeing as most guys would be expecting sex for doing something nice. I then met him out coincidentally a few weeks later and he danced with me properly and I just stayed and watched a movie with him. Nada was expected (which when genuine will make girls go crazy :) ) I expect he just wished to have some company. Which for me after having being date raped from someone I thought was my friend in school was a massive relief and gave me hope in good men again.

And why do guys think girls dont love nerds? My partner is an engineer and I absolutely adore his mathematical ability and logic. I guess I find attractive in others my shortcomings (I'm a bit unorganised, not very good at maths and say yes wayyyy too much). I think its the hard working/protective aspect that makes military guys so attractive.

of a desert fighting some crazy ass people that have AKs

and will blow themselves up just to take at least one solider with him.

in training those army guys run 20 minutes non stop, stop for

5 mins, and then keep another 20 minutes the whole day.

Army guys...*sigh*..any girl who's dated a soldier will know why. I love military men..I've deffo got a thing for them, having dated 2 regular squaddies and a para.

Let me explain..yes its the uniform, but these guys can look after themselves as well not just physically but they can cook, clean and sew. They got absolutely stunning bodies, can last for hours and they know what they're doing!

They're brave, its the whole protection thing as well, having someone who will lay down his life for his country is probably the ultamite sacrifice. Any guy who can go away to a foreign country, spend god knows how many months in horrific conditions, and come back and the first he wants to do is to see his girl after talking to her non-stop on MSN for months because he's missed her..is worth it.

I love my men to be strong, masculine, full of testosterone, stand up for me and look the nuts and to me that's a man in the army.

Well for me going to the ARMY here in a few months please try and not talk bad about people who serve in the arm forces. Its just there job to do what there told, it wasent the soldiers who want to go and risk there life. Its the president and his advisors.

Anyways to the question its mostelyh a fetish for them. They believe they will give them protection and it makes them feel all cudely inside. Also they also look at them as athletes wich girls also like, all about the addditude of the person. only a couple things you can do really, move to wear there isn't a base or make yourself better. I think those were just some particular girls. I don't think every girl likes an army guy. Some girls like business men, arm guys, artists, musicians, doctors, etc. Some like a guy for who he is and not his occupation. I actually like my boyfriend because of his sense of humor and he had a charm... but I did not care for his occupation (while my mother did).

But I know girls like a guy who can protect them so maybe those particular girls want an army guy because they feel like those guys are 'super heroes', work out, and are patriotic to their country. My boyfriend is actually going into the military though but right now he isn't an 'army guy'. He is skinny and not muscular. I really don't care if he does become muscular... actually I would not prefer if he becomes buff at all. My preference is an average guy with a bit of muscle on the arms but nothing extreme if that happens. lol I don't like big guys. But I think those girls you hung out with like those 'big' guys.

Of course, you presume the war on terror is pointless... that happens to be your opinion and is probably derived from you political views. Whatever the case, I'm curious to know if you'd ever go and fight for your country? What would it take for you to give up your life for a cause? Women are going to find men attractive that have guts. It's just how it is. A guy who can put his life out on the line for some cause greater than themselves is much more attractive than a guy who won't. Alright dude, I'm a marine and for one a lot of girls relate being part of an organization such as the army or whatever shows that they have commitment and are willing to work through hard times. And yes for some reason girls like uniforms. Try not to take it to heart, if a girl is out with you and she can that easily forget about being there with you, she's not worth it.

One last thing, calling the war pointless is pretty hurtful to some people. Like me who has lost friends and a family member in this "pointless war". And "superficial"? There is something called the food chain and Army Guys are at the top because we are better, smarter, faster, stronger, and damb sexier than you civilian pussies. These are typically 'traditional' women who seek a man who might fit under the same description, and in their minds army guys are a good source of this.  Don't be jealous, in my experience these women are typically the ones with little to offer, and I have army friends who don't like the girls that pursue them because of this idea, but came seem to attract other types girls.
