Evil of the Century

One of the things I learned was to respect an enemy as powerful as Depression is. The Evil of the Century, as it is called, has earned such title by having many advantages in its favor.

Its main advantage is that many people do not consider it something to be taken seriously. Without knowing it, they open the doors of their homes and their lives. They invite depression to get inside as a vampire which legend warns: "Never invite such evil to your home". In case of this evil, if it gets in - and it might - it won't come alone.

Depression is being colorblind and constantly told how colorful the world is.

All of us, some day of our lives, will be depressed, Something might happen to make us feeling down or sad. But in a few days, you get over it, It's normal.

The depression we need to be aware of - and get treatment - is the one that doesn't go away and it's not caused by any external factor.

Everything may be perfect but you still feel your body aching; you are always needing to sleep more; you can't eat or eat too much. You just can't think properly because there is a dark cloud over your head trapping your thoughts.

It's an unexplainable sadness

Remember how you feel when you have the Flu?

You feel like crap and can't get out of bed

Imagine this feeling on a daily basis. Phisically you feel like crap. Mentally, it's worse. You can't read, can't socialize or even feel hapiness. And the worst part is being judged.

What are the worst things you should NEVER say to someone in Depression?

--- LIFE ISN'T EASY TO ANYONE!

--- TRY TO THING POSITIVELY.

--- GET OUT OF BED AND DO SOMETHING!

--- THERE ARE PEOPLE IN WORSE SITUATION THAN YOU!

Sleep just isn't sleep anymore. It's an escape.

Other than getting help, what should we do if we suspect a friend or loved one is depressed? Sometimes, just being by their side.

Agreeing that it sucks.

Never letting them feel they are alone.

Yes thank you for this Take. People need to be informed about depression and what the symptoms are etc. It's sooo easy to fall into this deep deep dark black hole called depression.

There are far worse mental illnesses that are still not talked about. Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, and Bi-Polar are far worse than Depression and are still stigmatized. Depression is beginning to be well understood whereas Schizophrenia is still mocked and consider a "psycho" disorder.

Very simple and straight to the point.
Totally agree with you on how to deal with the worst type of depression. Sadly nowadays everybody is preoccupied with their "Online Virtual Social Life" that they forget we are still humans and things like depression hit us badly.
I have been living those days frequently for more than 10 years and I know exactly what you mean.
Today, I rarely have nights full of sleep, I wake up exhausted, feeling like a truck been running over me the whole night.

I think two days ago I had many nightmares waking me up a lot.
I do remember the last one which was: me having an operation where the doctor was emptying all of my organs and leaving only the flesh and heart beating loud.
It felt so real and I woke up sweating and panting like crazy.
This is all due to sub-conscience and depression.
Psychology is a big wide world.

Love the take. Depression is something that not many people take seriously nowadays. It's more like a joke which makes me so angry sometimes. People joke about things that affect people's lives on a huge scale and it just isn't funny. People also just don't understand what it's like to be depressed and so it's hard to help or comfort someone is depressed but you're so right about just being there for them.

Personally I was depressed all of last year and no one including my family noticed except my closest friend. Why do people not notice when the people around them are hurting or suffering?

I think it's only bad to say "THERE ARE PEOPLE IN WORSE SITUATION THAN YOU!" to someone depressed if that's the only thing you tell them. I mean it more of an inspiration. To tell you the truth, most depressed people are from first world countries. I can say that, not often, doesn't mean I don't support because it's true and that's not the only thing I say to make someone feel better. I show support and care and It's motivational by the way. If you think about how satisfied because you have stuff most people can't have and you just wanna end your life, It's really... selfish... i mean sorry but nothing personal and I'm not shaming anyone. I can warn them when I criticize but I just want people to have thicker skin and it's a key to happiness making them love themselves regardless. Just opening their eyes and it's called motivation.

I'm sorry but this is not an issue, it is in a different way, but not the way described. People who feel down or lazy immediately call themselves depressed, it's our generations favorite thing to do. It's almost mocking the people who actually have been diagnosed

Some of what your describing make actually be symptoms of some other malady. Chronic fatigue is one of them.

Depression affects eating habits too. If you can't eat and are throwing up all the time, you're not going to have energy. Period.

Someone told me I wasn't depressed because mine can be cured with simple things such as puppies and money. Mine is based off emotional trauma and not being happy with my current life.

The evil of the century? That's more than a little conceited. I'm sorry, but there are far worse things in the world than people who are ill-equipped to handle life. That's not to say there aren't some people that have some legitimate issues, but most people who say they're depressed are just being melodramatic.

@InTimoreDei Yeah, depression is like its own little culture at this point and everyone pretends like their own personal problems are more important than actual issues. It's such a first world thing, it's ridiculous. Most of its just melodrama. It strikes me as a bunch of grown ass adults who never learned how to properly deal with teen angst. Meanwhile, like you said, there's a shit ton of far more serious mental illnesses that get no sort of attention.
