My Review on The Evil Within 2

I have to say, I was already expecting it to be good but I didn’t expect it to be this good. Gameplay, physics, graphics and story are all good.

For those who are unfamiliar with the series; it so far follows the story of a detective who’s family was destroyed by a sinister secret organization called “Mobius” who is in possession of advanced technology which includes a advanced machine called “STEM” that works as a form of virtual reality in which the people connected to it get their conscience transported into the virtual world. That world happens to be inhabited by various monsters and disfigured creatures who may have been human once. Most of the game takes place in the STEM world.

My Review on The Evil Within 2

1.) It beats the original

People often say that sequels are never as good the originals but this is one of the rare occasions where it surpasses the first Evil within. The reason why is because it fixed many of the complaints that fans had regarding the first one like the camera angles.

2.) New gameplay features

The player now has the ability to craft useful items and upgrade weapons via workbench. The RPG leveling up system returns with a minor change in which you need to unlock new abilities with the rare red gel. I like these new features, it makes the game more challenging in which you have to rely on crafting and have good eyes to spot rare items.

3.) Sandbox world

It’s most notable difference is it’s non linear story in which the player can do side missions(optional objectives) for some rewards. Certain parts of the game feature a small open world map in which the player can free roam for resources and collectibles which makes the game very enjoyable considering that you have to be careful to not walk into a enemy ambush.

4.) Combat

Due to being a third person survival horror game, the player has the option to eliminate enemies to clear a path. As the player gets more points, the player can gradually improve the character’s combat skills. Most of the combat includes firearm use and a crossbow that is the most reliable weapon in the game. The player also can use melee weapons which includes primarily a knife and a temporary axe. There are more weapons in this game than the previous because certain weapons have variants that the player can acquire.

5.) Stealth

Of course, the other option is stealth. The stealth system can also be gradually upgraded by acquiring points making sneak attacks more effective and making it easier to avoid detection. This is a neat new feature as well. While the previous game did have stealth, it wasn’t as dynamic as this game. Of course, if the player is spotted by the enemies, the player has to decide between “fight or flight”.

Unlike some other games that guide the player through the game, the player must do a little thinking by coming up with tactics and strategies to overcome the odds.

6.) Easter Eggs

There are several Easter egg collectibles that can be found but require good eyes and exploration to find. I’m not going to spoil it for you.

7.) Story

One of the main reasons why I bought this game is for it’s story. It’s a direct sequel to the first game and it takes place 3 years after the first game in which the same protagonist from the previous game has to save his daughter that is trapped within STEM. I like how it explores the “father-daughter” relationship. A type of relationship that is often underrepresented. So unlike the previous game where the protagonist is just trying to survive a situation he got dragged into, the evil within 2 focuses more on the protagonist’s personal life that was only briefly referenced in the previous game.

8.) Physics

The physics are excellent, there’s rag doll physics for realism, the characters move in realistic manners, there are a few repeated gestures(nodding heads etc) but other than that, the characters move smoothly.

9.) Graphics

The graphics are also very good, a person with untrained eyes might assume it’s live action. Maybe not on par with some of the more newer games but the graphics are still very good.

10.) Miscellaneous

Many features return from the previous game such as the health and combat systems. Which is very neat. The voice acting is very good as well even though they changed the voice actors of the returning characters. After the player competes the game, the player will unlock the “new game plus” which allows the player to start a new game with all the upgrades and items the player acquired on the their first playhthrough. The number of rewards depends on the how high the difficulty is on completion, the player will unlock new items and features that player can use on a new playthrough. Most notably the “brass knuckles” which can make short work of most enemies.

Overall I give it a 9.9/10 rating. It’s a amazing video game.

  • Agreed, solid review. Though if there is one thing I dislike, it'd be the skill system. Though that's more of a personal preference than it being a bad feature.

    • The first one came out 3 years ago, it should still be available at GameStop.

  • Sounds pretty cool. What can you get it on?
