Alcoholism because it's more physically addictive, but also because it's harder to deal with for the people around the addicted person in my opinion. Maybe I'm biased 'cause I really don't mind people smoking around me, but although obviously I'd be concerned for their health (cancer, emphesema, etc.; don't smoke kids!), someone chainsmoking wouldn't bother me that much. So they smoke, maybe have to take smoking breaks from stuff fairly regularly, stand outside of public places, etc. Maybe they get irritable if they can't have a cigarette. But they're pretty functional otherwise. If you're an alcoholic you're out of it a lot of the time. I mean my stepdad spends as much time as he can in the pub, and when he comes in he's fairly often just completely paralytic; he'll smear food all over his face, fall asleep face down on the floor, I've seen him shit himself in the kitchen (which my Mum then had to deal with because he wasn't capable). Alcohol makes a lot of people abusive/violent; he'll be really cruel and unpleasant and then not be able to remember doing it. He falls asleep at work. He has various alcoholism-related ailments, aches and pains etc. which he won't admit are because of the drink. He's pretty useless in terms of looking after his kids, performing basic household tasks, etc. because he's always drunk. He'll stay in bed most of the day until he can go to the pub when he's not at work. He's alienated himself from most of his friends. So yeah.. I'd rather be around or date a chain smoker than an alcoholic for those reasons..

what's an average level of alcoholism?

both are extreme turn offs for me. and that includes smoking pot, not just cigs.

I think smoking is worse because it is bad for everyone in the area. Alcohol is just bad for the person ingesting it. Both are bad.

Changing smokers always smell / look gross..
And spend 20 percent of their life's on a smoke break... at least alcoholics don't bother others at least people that aren't family.

Well I think they are 50/50 because they can go hand and hand.
