Do you believe body-piercing and tatooing are self-mutilation?

when i told my mom about me wanted to get a tathoo en piercing, she said she has has wondered why I or anyone else would want to mutilate their body like that? and now im confused

That's a tough question.
Piercings, I've never been a huge fan of. What purpose does it serve other than aesthetic? And what happens if you are in a car accident? Metal catching and dragging, tearing through delicate skin and leaving horrid scars. No thanks.
Tattoos, though? I know it's weird that I like one and not the other, but I view ink as an expression of your inner self [provided your tattoo (s) mean something to you.]
They're beautiful art, to be proudly displayed and cherished. If they were well thought out, and well done. Not some botched basement tattoo.

It depends on the extent of it.

If the person has tats or piercings every where (to me) it looks like they destroyed their body.
They better to planning to get into a profession where that is acceptable.

If the person has a few tats or piercings, I think it looks hot on the right person.

I think that beautiful people don't need them. It's attention seeking and if you already have a nice face or nice body you don't need to bring attention to it. I also regret the one I have because of religious purposes. I didn't need it at all and let my friends peer pressure me into it on my 21st birthday. However I do have more respect for people who get them for meaningful representation. People now just get any and everything just to get tatted all over. Don't do it be different. Listen to your mom.

That's what my dad said. But whenever he would see tribal body art he thought it was cool and beautiful. I told him I didn't really care and that it makes me happy
