How to help a loved one quit smoking?

If it is only occasionally then I really don't see the issue. If they are a smoker then it isn't just the stress, they are an addict. You can't make someone quit, they have to actually want to do it.

If I was really insistent that the person quit I might make a little visit to a chemo ward for cancer patients. Let them see how fun smoking is.

I'll be honest. My sister would do that every time she got stressed out too.
There isn't much you can do. It all depends on them. They have to want to quit. They must work on their self control to stop quitting. Encouraging them is good, but other than that, there isn't much.

The only way is to stop... get him patches or the gum...

Do they have those vapo-cigs now? They can come with different levels of nicotine or something, maybe he can try those and go down slowly to zero % nicotine. They come in different flavors, my friend uses this sometimes to help him quit.

He has to WANT to stop. Otherwise, no amount of convincing is going to do anything.
