And how far do you get during this 10 min? There's pathetic benefits in running for a duration of time. Run a distance under a certain time. Anyone can 'run' for 10 minutes, very few can run 2 miles under 10.

Meditation and deep breathing exercises also help. Being relaxed helps some too.
Eat healthy, work on minimizing anxiety through meditation or other things like exercise. Which you can do, rain or shine, morning or night, at the gym. Regular sessions on the elliptical are a great way to get your cardio with minimum impact on your joints like with running.
Running isn't the only way, though it is the quickest.
Eat healthy. Jog in the morning. Exercise/jog in the house.

Martial arts, it will work you until exhaustion and it will teach defence, I pay twenty dollars a month to go. But for really short amount time as a month I don't know?
If by improve you mean get slower when resting then you need to be exercising a lot and eating healthy
