Wisdom teeth removal: did they put you under or just numb you?

Question

If they put you under: how much did it hurt when you woke up? How long after the procedure?

If they just numbed you: how much did it hurt during and after? How long after did it hurt?

Apparently my dentist doesn't have the resources to put me under to remove my wisdom teeth, so they're just going to numb me. They said I could pay $50 more to get gas to "take the edge off".

When I had my wisdom teeth removed last year I was given a pill that basically made me 10 sheets to the wind. They also gave me freezing to numb the area where they were removing the teeth.

I only felt a little discomfort during the process, but it wasn't that bad. The only thing was they had to put in another freezing, I only felt a little pain for a second, and they numbed the area again right away and the pain went away instantly.

I don't remember much of my surgery, as I was 10 sheets to the wind. I don't even remember driving home.

My mouth felt fine after. The only pain I experienced was from dry socket that I did get after (not sure how). But I was given pain meds after.

Most dentists cannot put you under. You need to go to the hospital to do that (that's what my dentist explained). But they could if I needed it there as they had the resources.

I would probably pay for the gas, especially if you are nervous about the surgery.

I had a pretty good experience. The dentist I had was very good at what he does and the surgery went well. Just make sure you rest afterwards, don't try to do too much for like a week after (don't be like me!). I think I over did it and that's why I had the problem I did :P

I had all 3 of mine removed at the same time. I was broke, so they just numbed me. It didn't hurt during, just felt uncomfortable.
The guy said I was a trooper lol Apparently most people get put under when they're removing more than 1.

The gave me some strong pills too but didn't take them because I didn't wanna become a druggie lol I only took one I think.

The painful part for me was not being able to eat :/
Be prepared for a swollen face and to be spitting up blood. And to lose weight as you can't really eat right while the swelling subsides.

I was given a general IV anesthetic which kind of left me feeling stoned out of my mind. In my case they removed all 4 at once. I got it done only when two of the teeth had already chipped (my teeth are pretty tight together and I put it off for a long time).

They had to snap me into consciousness after the whole operation was finished (took a few hours). Then I thought everything they said was funny while the dentist remarked, "No significant history of drug use with this one!"

After I got home though, I took a nap and woke up and the pain at that point kind of sucked. It went away though after I took some over-the-counter painkillers. It wasn't so bad since it's just kind of an annoying soreness after which lasted for some days. The pain-killers made it far less annoying.

He just used local anesthetic for me. I was awake the whole time. It didn't hurt me at all (then again, I have very high pain tolerance). The procedure took about 25-30 minutes to remove all four of them.

After the procedure, I was prescribed Tylenol 3 for pain but I never had to use them. The biggest issue was swelling so I constantly had to apply ice to my face. I also had to be careful eating for 1 or 2 days after as well.

You should be fine with him just numbing you.

Well going under would be hella expensive so thank god that they don't do that lol numbing is probably the better solution. It won't hurt but you'll here cracking and popping sounds when the dentist pulls your wisdom tooth out. I suggest taking earphones and music with you on the day (so you don't hear all those noises, just make sure it's cool with your dentist) hearing all of that can be scary. Other then that the numbing should wear off after 3 hours, but may feel odd from the gap in your mouth, from where the wisdom tooth was

Story time! - They took all 4 in one go.

- Woke up, remember vaguely having someone walk me to a car. Passed out, don't remember going in the house. Woke up about 3 hours later.

3 days later - Didn't take pain meds. It only hurt when I tried to talk excessively (for my job).

^ Gas shouldn't be needed but why not? Makes you giggly and I like that feeling.

It didn't really hurt, but it was uncomfortable for about 48 hours due to the swellin g.
But it's not that bad. And I'd asked for a complete anesthesia, don't think you want to be awake when they work these things out of the bone. Now you wake up and it's all done.

Local anesthesia for me. Didn't feel shit during the operation, like I could feel pressure from when they jammed the tools in there but I didn't feel any pain. It was the same kind of pressure you get when you bite down really hard.
After the anesthesia wore off it hurt like hell, though. But that was just because I wasn't popping pills left and right.
Getting put under just to get your wisdom tooth/teeth removed is pointless. I don't understand why people do it.

I was put under. And it didn't hurt when I woke up but I did feel puffy and annoyed because I couldn't really talk. It didn't really start to hurt for me until the day after. They do give you medicine and my mom bought some strong over the counter pain meds in case I didn't want to take the other ones so that helps.

I just had a local anesthetic. I had the option of being put under but since it wasn't necessary I didn't choose that. During the procedure I didn't feel anything. I could, however, hear what was happening and that was kind of strange. About an hour after the procedure was over I started to feel pain but the oral surgeon gave me a prescription for a pain med so it wasn't that bad. I just don't like the idea of going under general anesthetic when it's not necessary.

They put me under.
When I woke up it didn't hurt at all because I was completely out of it.
I was freezing cold and loopy.
It was funny because they only gave my mom two things of gauze which clearly wasn't enough
So my mom was freaking out because the bleeding wouldn't stop and she called them and they said it was normal which irritated my mom because they didn't tell her before, lol.
Anyways. Not a lot of pain, just a lot of blood... Everywhere.
The pain killers were nice.

I did not have all of mine taken out at the same time. The first time I had the top two wisdom teeth removed as they had broken through the gums. The bottom two had not broken through the gums so I waited over a year but they didn't break through. Then I went a second time to get those removed.

The first time wasn't so bad but after the second time I had a bit of dry socket which was very uncomfortable. Oh, and to answer your question, they just numbed me.

had 4 wisdom and 4 rear molars pulled in 4 days (2 a day). i was just numbed up...

the anesthesia shots to the roof of your mouth and under your tongue hurt the most.

once they start the procedure it just feels like a bunch of tugging and pulling... expect to be sore after. they'll prescribe vicodin if necessary... 4 tylenol was enough for me.

Just numbed.
It's Novocain but 2X's stronger, or twice the amount.
It didn't really hurt, just something you're aware of. I was given pain pills. I only used one that night to make sure I could sleep. I didn't need it or the rest of them.
I was told to "bite down on tea bags" the first day to help it heal. I have no idea why, if it worked or who came up with this theory. I did anyway, I figured it couldn't hurt.

My room mate Today is going in for Oral surgery to have the rest of his teeth out. The oral surgeon is using just Novocaine and told him it was not necessary in his own case to "Knock him out."
This 'Wisdom teeth removal' is actually very Easy compared to his problem procedure. Not much pain, probably Novocaine, and he will most likely write you out a prescription for the Pain that may Remain... For that day anyways.

Do not get put under unless absolutely needed. Its more hassle, more time you can't eat before, more risks, feel worse after.

The numbing works.

The gas means you don't care. I didn't feel like the gas was doing anything, but I was preternaturally calm and blasé about it, looking back, yeah, the gas had an impact.

They just numbed me when they removed all four of my wisdom teeth. You can still feel the pressure and personally, I didn't like it lol if felt like a huge digging on my jaw and I wanted it to stop. I was younger tho so it will probably be different for you. Afterwards, it was fine. Just very numb and I couldnt really eat anything solid the rest of the day.

i was put under i'd definitely get the gas. i've heard with enough Novocaine it is fairly ok but that the real traumatizing part is seeing them yanking on the teeth and the blood that comes out

I had the choice to do either. I chose under. Never experienced any pain. They gave me pain killers but I just gave them to my uncle who had cancer. May he rest in peace.

they put me to sleep when I had my wisdom teeth out but it took a while to try to sleep because I was still kinda a wake when they took my wisdom teeth out and then I started to sleep and then I woke up

Never had wisdom teeth removed, but did have a molar way in the back removed, was both numbed and put under. Numbing had no effect on the pain (on a scale of 1-10 the pain was 100, so I had to be put under.

I was put under for my own years ago. My son had it done last year and he was put under as well.  Pay for the gas, you won't regret it. If you are able to be put under, do it.
