Why are drugs bad?

Before you yell at me for asking a stupid question, this is for my project. I want to hear views from everyone on why drugs are bad for everyone. (Yes I mean drugs in general)

EVERY drug, from caffeine and aspirin to heroin and meth, have side effects. There is no such thing as a drug that isn't some kind of health risk - and most of the things we think of as "drugs" (drugs used "recreationally", be they illegal drugs or prescription pills) have very significant, negative side effects, often including addiction.

But beyond that, they are (in my opinion) tools of the weak-minded who are willing to trade their health and money (and often happiness or even safety) for a temporary escape from reality - as that's what drugs deliver and what people seek from them.

The biggest problem, of course, is that what almost always starts as "just a little fun" for many becomes both an on-going quest for a "bigger, more powerful" high (progressing up the chain to more powerful and more dangerous drugs) and an addiction that leaves users in abject misery that even drug use can barely dull for a short while - at the cost of losing everything else they ever valued, including their relationships with others.

Even powerful, successful, beloved people aren't immune. Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Michael Jackson, and Prince - people who "had everything" - died because of drug use, and in their cases, the drugs were prescription drugs. The famous people lost to street drugs is almost endless. It's even more sad when someone like Chris Farley idolizes someone like John Belushi to the point where he killed himself with drugs in the exact same way his idol did.

But worse than those who died are those who lived - and suffered in massive ways, and lost everything. Their misery is real.

While I hate to use "reality TV" to describe actual reality, it would be worth watching Celebrity Rehab (with Dr. Drew). Several of those celebs are now dead from ODs or poor health due to heavy drug use, and others are still addicts in misery. Fortunately, a few are doing much better - but the pull of addiction is always there.

At the moment, the worst elements of some of the harder drugs are the dependency that they can create and the fact that those drugs are supplied and profited from by criminal gangs. Those criminal gangs, in turn, use their profits to bring violence and disorder to communities. Not only that, people who are dependent on the harder drugs will often cheat, steal and kill for those drugs. Families can break down, children can be neglected, babies can be born addicted, communities can be torn apart and a whole lot of people can and do get killed. Drugs and the crime behind those drugs are a global epidemic that are keeping entire communities poor and hopeless.

Now, the big argument is around whether legalising drugs could change much of the problem. The idea being to take the profit out of the hands of the criminals and to ensure the supply of drugs to those who want them. That's a whole other debate that I'm not going to get into right now.

Dangerous ones are. But, many natural ones are not, if not abused.

2. Drug consumption fuels drug production which provides money to sustain underground organisations, which deal with a range of illegal activities like people trafficking.
3. Prolonged use cause permanent damage to the body.
4. It affects the relationships of the drug user in a negative way.
