What's this pain in my chest?

I've started to have this sharp pain in my chest and it won't go away. It's around the middle of my chest on the breast bone and rib cage. It hurts when I sneeze, cough or just move around. It's a sharp pain and it has me on the verge of tears. Is this a serious issue? Should I go to the doctors tomorrow just to make sure it isn't serious? Thanks. :(

Thanks =P I feel stupid for asking this over the Internet but I just wanted to know if anyone had this before and what you did to treat it. I'll just go to urgent care first thing tomorrow morning and get an x ray. My mom is taking me.

Turns out it was inflammation around my rib cage. Thanks to those who answered.

As I mentioned earlier -- you've probably just pulled one of yr "intercostal" muscles (= the stupid little muscles that connect the ribs, and that control the expansion/contraction of the diaphragm when you breathe).
Sucks -- and scary -- but, at the end of the day it's like any other muscle strain:

• Alternate between heat and ice 4-6 times a day (DO NOT place a GEL ice pack in DIRECT contact with the skin -- this would be ok for a pack made of actual ice)

• Take Advil or Aleve to reduce inflammation

• Try not to eat a ton of foods that promote inflammation (take a look at lists on the internet)

• Position yrself to reduce the expansion of the diaphragm:
Stand in the Playboy position (shoulders back, shoulder blades flat and "in", tits forward!)
When you lie down, roll up 1-2 towels and put them vertically underneath yr spine, from the neck to the mid-back

And go get it checked out when you have a moment. <3

I've had it a few times too, went to the doctor for it twice, the first time I had an infection in the tissue around my breast bone. The second time it was mostly from putting too much weight on my shoulders (I carry like a 6kg backpack to school every day and also had to help my grandparents carry stuff a lot then). It can be a lot of things though, it's best to just go to the doctor to get it checked out. I hope the pain goes away quickly for you :)

A few chances:
1) You have the same problem I had a year back: inflammation of the cartilage between your breast bone and ribs. It's caused by emotional tension. Relax and it gets better.
2) You've been hyperventilating, which also gives similar pains. Solution: control your breathing even though you tend to accelerate it. Talking can help since talking and hyperventilating at the same time is not possible.
3) You've sneezed or coughed so hard that you have an injury to a rib or the musles between your ribs. That can take a few days to heal...

Hello, Rainbow! When in doubt, always seek medical advice from a proper doctor or other qualified practitioner. I am pretty sure it's nothing more than a strained muscle. When you sneeze, it tends to undo the healing that has already taken place, so it can go on for several days, possibly weeks.

It sounds like you could be experiencing anxiety. You could have the
start of bronchitis and or sinus infection. If it doesn't get better than
by all means you want see a doctor.

The reason I ask is that sharp, stabbing pain is nerve pain. You're very young for it, but if you did have a rash and that pain, I'd say you may have shingles. It typically strikes people who are in their 60's, as the immune system weakens due to age. But it can happen even to people at your age. If you've had chicken pox, you've got the shingles virus. 1 in 3 adults gets it at some point in their life, and it starts just like you described.

Ok, good there's no rash. I'd keep an eye out for it, just in case. But like others have said, just out of caution, I'd have it checked. You probably pulled a muscle or something, but better to be sure than trust fate. There's a lot of things that can cause that. Everything from bruised ribs to a gas bubble. But a medical professional will be much better qualified than any of us on here. :)

I used to get that way back when I had to use an inhaler, I was like 4.
I'm really not sure what on Earth it is but I 100% know what you're talking about.
All I can tell you is that its nothing to worry about and it should go away soon.
The internet is crazy lmao all I can say is that I have a headache and its like "BOOM CANCER"
But just to be safe you should see a doctor, not a hospital or an emergency room, but just a doctor. It may be inflammation.

I mean, I'd say look it up on the internet, but then again it'll diagnose you with cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's all together.
I'd probably wait out the night and see how you feel tomorrow, and if you're still not doing well I'd head to the doctor's.

Uh could be anxiety, or you could have bruised or slightly moved rib, could be the start of bronchitis nasty stuff or even an infection. I'd recommend seeing a doctor since obviously none of us are qualified to really answer this.

Depends. If you feel it in your heart, then you should probably go to the doctor. If you feel it in your muscle, it's possible you pulled or strained it.

We can't say that, only a doctor who examines you might.
(My wife has occasional plexus solaris cramps (contractions of the diaphragm, I suppose) since I know her, doctors examined everything three times, tried everything. No cause found.
Of course you might have something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, from sore muscles to ulcers, to a heart or lung condition.
Only a doctor might find it... or not.

I have had multiple occurrences of chest pin and after getting them checked out none were cardiac related. Most were muscular and s couple were pneumonia
