u +1 ywhat I know, from (heavy) smokers themselves is that nicotine is not only addictive to their brains, but it is also a very very strong habit they do have, a physical one " a ritual"
so maybe, the preparing of the tea, and the constant repetition of drinking tea and stuff might be a substitution of the physical habits that have become relaxing or calming for him, besides... . all that sugar, which is addictive as well.
what I also know from smokers is that, most of them can reduce, their habits but not stop them to zero, so you say... he can drink five cups... or ten cups... so maybe you can try and talk to him about drinking less cups rather than more? do you get along well with your father? maybe the two you can spend more time together during the day, and have him distracted from those habits by doing something else the two of you?
------ " 2. Nicotine dependence
Smoking is initially a habit leading to physical and psychological dependence. An important role in the smoking-related phenomenon is a number of repeated movements in the smoking act of the hand and oral muscles, cigarette outbreaks, lighting a cigarette, blowing smoke, holding, and extinguishing the cigarette butt. All these movements are repeated a few hundred times a day [6] and become a ritual that is repeated. A smoker thus makes about 500–600 kisses daily by activating their oral muscles. The smell of smoke, fire, or lighter, and the way cigarette is lit also affect dependence. Cigarettes are like magic wands that are used to relax, calm down, relieve stress, or as a substitute for enhanced food enjoyment. "00 Reply

+1 yHe's replacing nicotine with caffeine and sugar. In your brain, they all fill the same pleasure center. Essentially, he's trading vices. 10 cups of caffeinated tea is extremely excessive and will wreak havoc on your nervous system all by itself. Add to that extra sugar, and it's nothing but empty calories and more agitation to your body. He's probably on a constant sugar high now because he doesn't even have time to crash.
Bottom line again, he's substituting one vice for another set of vices. This will not work out well for him either, in the long run. He's got to moderate his intake, and reduce the caffeine and sugar to maybe 2 cups a day, or better yet, switch to herbal teas and honey. Raw honey will be MUCH better for him than raw or processed sugar. And you can tell him I said so !!! LOL10 Reply
+1 yDrinking tea in that amount of excess is actually really bad for you. Anything that is consumed or done in excess is bad for you. I would say it’s definitely better than cigarettes, but there is caffeine in tea and it also stains teeth

@Sanchuz thank you! 😊 and @Sugar_7 just let him drink it. Some people have addictive personalities where they need to be addicted to something. I think it’s better than cigarettes anyways. Eventually he will get tired of drinking that much tea and stop. But also he’s getting his water in that way, so it definitely could be worse. Usually be that stop smoking move to junk food so you should be thankful it’s not junk food.

@Sanchuz Drinking also destroys the liver after a certain amount and time. I found it, let your father drink water I think he can't get out of the toilet.

Also maybe get him some matcha tea. Matcha tea is the healthiest tea someone can drink. He will probably be thankful for your thinking of him and you will feel a little better
+1 yYeah your dad needs a lot of work to get him to stay away from sugar, right @Sugar_7 😏
I suggest you do what you did back when you were a kid and he’ll leave drinking too much sugar and tea for sure😂😂11 Reply

+1 yCould have worse habits. It’s great he stopped smoking and hopefully he did it in time to save his lunges. Now he replaced the habit with tea. I know you and your mom love him and want him to be happy but also give him some grace as I heard quitting smoking is a huge deal. I guess you could try to introduce flavored water or something else to cut down the sugar but overall the best thing is celebrate his none smoking days and love him in other ways. Plus take him on a hike on the weekend and then he’ll want water over tea :)
10 Reply 917 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. The tea is good. The sugar is not. He needs to drink the team with little to no sugar. For instance, maybe make some sun tea ice tea or add honey. But the sugar needs to be reduced. 5-10 cups of tea all with sugar is going to help induce diabetes.

+1 yYou're right, he is substituting cigarettes for tea. He has an addictive personality. If you can help wean him off the sugar, tea itself isn't too bad.
13 Reply- +1 y
Actually... The more I think about this, the more I don't think it is the tea he is addicted to. It is the sugar. Sugar in itself has strong addictive qualities too.

+1 yTea might replace stress and they say when you quit an addiction you have to replace it with a new habit - he might stop drinking so much tea after he's spent more time away from his previous addiction.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 ySounds to me like its not the tea that is the underlying issue. Tea 3-4 cups a day in an average Cultural Asian household is pretty normal but if he is drinking a lot more it sounds more like he is trying to keep busy in the same sense smokers chain smoke. You could always go into deep conversations with him and see

+1 yNo. I go out of my way to not get addicted to any type of drug. Including caffeine. I have tea. A few times a week. Sometimes I don't.

10 Reply4.9K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. ten cups might be excessive but probably better than 10 cups of coffee and certainly better than smoking.
I stopped drinking alcohol and drank more Coke. It was just something to do.10 ReplyHigh sugar is way more dangerous than cigs, especially for older men. Can't he just try lemon teas, ginger teas or milk teas?
