I noticed men tend to be more stubborn when it comes to overall health in general. Can’t ever get my dad to go to the doctors for anything. My boyfriend won’t ever go to the doctors either

Men really don't seek treatment for anything medical until it gets bad
I'll hold my hands up and confess my own guilt because honestly in 5 years of adulthood I have sought medical help twice once for a UTI and the other was for my heart condition
It stems from some old machismo stuff that unless you believe it's killing you, you just carry on
Some are in denial and don’t want to admit something is wrong. But to be fair I’ve seen a lot of men online admitting their struggles with mental health.
Cus its weakness and men are valued on their strengths not weaknesses. So they avoid it. It makes them feel ashamed of themselves even more to go for help.
The real problem is that you can't cure mental illnesses when the problem comes from society itself. We see more and more mental illnesses every year because society is damaged beyond repair.
It gets even worse if you are a man and a military veteran. If it becomes known we are seeking help, we are seen as crazy psychos or "The military taught you to be tougher than that".
I’ve never heard that, actually I see a lot of support out there for military and veteran related mental. More than I see mental health talked about for any other demographic of men at least.
There's this stigma against mental health that we're fighting against. Some people think it makes them "weak". & Some people think it will negatively impact their career.
@Ryfyle It is a fact that some men think it makes them weak, as I've had pt's tell me this to my face. They aren't avoiding it because they think they're a "danger to society" lol. A lot that do think they're a danger to their family actually self admit. & Being depressed does NOT mean you're a danger to society (I'm not sure if you're steering away from the examples mentioned in the OP)
Being depressed and having anything that look like a gun in your facebook profile is a good way to get "accidentally" gunned down by the police. You might not see a depressed man as a threat but society sure does. You loose a great deal of your constitutional rights and are basically branded a criminal if your a man with mental health issues.
@Ryfyle Not everyone who is depressed is going to run around with a gun. That's the problem right there. The stigma. Assuming that someone who has depression (there are different types) is dangerous. Seeing it as abnormal and in a negative light. Another reason why people dont get help. Stigma and misconceptions. If someone is running around with a gun then they have a lot more problems than just "depression". Educate yourself. Unbelievable.
@Dinklex3 You want me Educate myself over my own personal experiences? Get off your high fucking horse and don't bullshit me when you haven't been committed to a "Mental Health Facility" as a teen. Your bullshit, Clout farming, Social "activism" means fuck all. Do you know how it feels to be labeled a monster without doing a thing? To be the random weirdo, to be the outsider, to be so isolated? Don't Fucking tell me to be fucking educated about my own fucking existence.
It's fucking rich when somebody throws out the "Educate yourself" when they haven't lived the life. Shit like this is why you don't see men going out to get help. You are part of the problem.
Bigger stigma on men. World is set up to tolerate, listen and support womens problems. No one wants to hear mens issues including amongst men. That's part of being a man.
Men are less likely to seek help for mental illness because they know they will be ignored or not taken seriously, or just be told to 'Man up' or something equally derisive.
How do you come to equate men not being taken seriously when they try to get treatment for mental illness with 'toxic masculinity'? How it is their fault that the medical establishment sees their mental health as a secondary, tertiary or even lower level of concern? Sounds as thought it a cop out by the medical establishment to blame men for the failings of the medical establishment.
It’s not their fault, never said it was. Toxic masculinity is a cultural stigma that is super damaging. It’s a toxic way of viewing what strength, bravery and masculinity is, and while it affects society in large, it’s men who suffer most from it.
@OneManOnly01 I’m not mad… I have no issue with a wife talking her husbands last name, the same way I don’t have an issue with him taking her last name. You’re the one throwing around false accusations, did I offend you somehow?
Not everything is a social issue. Men dont seek "help" because no one legitimately cares about them. A male and a female can pay for a therapist, true, but the therapist is much more likely to feel genuine care for the female. Sad but true, men are disposable, dont fuck with nature
Me? I got my next appointment in 24 hours from now.

A life time of being told to suck it up and be a man. Watching women say things like, our fathers, brothers, sons die in war, truly women are the victims.
No one cares that a man is suffering. It's his job to earn, provide, sire and die.
Because the journey is worth way more than the treatment for attaining goals when setting foot away from the path of somnambulism even though it is downright deadly because of the material world of Ningen-Do attempting to claim you back.
Very good question. Men DO seek help for mental illness, but they typically wait until the symptoms are really bad, or a woman is pushing them to do something about the problems. Men often self-medicate with alcohol.
What Girls & Guys Said
Opinion

Men are used to that nobody cares about them and that they need to man up and just deal with their own problems.
Some women like to say they like too see their man vulnerable. By mosts guys experience it only leads to negative outcomes.
Men themselves "be a man" each other too.

Call the feds afterwards?

Men aren't allowed to show weakness it's encouraged for girls to speak out guy's are belittled if they do where I live at least
This whole life thing is a mess
Very
I think they try, but are less likely to be taken seriously.
Because it's stigmatized as weak. Especial if it involves being emotional. So most men hide it or don't talk about it.

It's about 50/50.
There's this stigma against mental health that we're fighting against.
Some people think it makes them "weak".
& Some people think it will negatively impact their career.
That's so off the mark, its painful. It's the opposite of "weakness". If you're a mentally ill man, you're a danger to society.
@Ryfyle It is a fact that some men think it makes them weak, as I've had pt's tell me this to my face.

because unlike women we dont always trust the medical industry as much. we do not want to become med addict zombies for the rest of our lives
Men are less likely to seek help for mental illness because they know they will be ignored or not taken seriously, or just be told to 'Man up' or something equally derisive.
So because of toxic masculinity?
How do you come to equate men not being taken seriously when they try to get treatment for mental illness with 'toxic masculinity'?
How it is their fault that the medical establishment sees their mental health as a secondary, tertiary or even lower level of concern?
Sounds as thought it a cop out by the medical establishment to blame men for the failings of the medical establishment.

@Subarugirl You shouldn't talk about toxic masculinity. You're not worthy of it
@OneManOnly01 why shouldn’t I talk about a social stigma that effects society at large?
@Subarugirl Because your (and many other feminists') very beliefs and opinions are the reason for the society being adversely affected by gender bias.
@OneManOnly01 except I’m not a feminist, so you’re just making things up now
@Subarugirl You're mad at the fact that women still like to use their man's last name and you're saying that you're not a femininist? Lies!!
@OneManOnly01 I’m not mad… I have no issue with a wife talking her husbands last name, the same way I don’t have an issue with him taking her last name. You’re the one throwing around false accusations, did I offend you somehow?

100% true
Because they think others will see them as weak.

unsure as to why... but I sure came up with a lot of reasons to not doing so
but also, I was a kid and later a teen, not quite a man yet
sadly its still seen as a weakness.
that toxic masculinity rearing its ugly head
