Absolutely not, as long as there is no shaming and name calling.
A child’s health and nutrition is so important. In schools, they follow a strict dietary and nutrition guideline to purposely put a child “on a diet,” but this diet should also be followed at home as well. The “MyPlate” template is often used in schools to ensure children get the necessary nutrients daily, which include proteins, (whole) grains, vegetables, fruits, and dairy. These are the healthy food categories you should be feeding your children daily. In school and at home, with the correct/recommended proportions.
Keeping a child’s weight at a healthy average for their age, height, and gender is so important for them and their future. Being overweight as a child and not having the correct nutrition being provided in homes and/or at school is a gateway to multiple health issues and diet-related diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
It is only right for you to put your children on a diet to keep them healthy. It’s a parent’s and school’s responsibility to provide them nutritious and healthy foods.
I'm actually not sure
I think that "diet" is a harsh word for a child, yet allowing a child to remain overweight without doing anything about it because you hope they lose weight as they grow is also most likely gonna have consequences on their health.
In my opinion the child should be having a more healthy lifestyle. It would be way better if instead of "diet" you just introduced it to them as a "healthier choice for the whole house". And yes the whole house. Putting a child into dieting or exercising and expecting them to go through it while you keep eating junk and not getting off the couch is most likely going to end up in failure. In order for them to adapt to it they will need a role model to follow.
Also- do not put the child into diet by telling them that you're doing it because of their weight. No one would like to be told that their so fat they need to diet, including a kid. Put more emphasis into the healthy aspect of it, and DO NOT count your childs calories in front of them.
It would be advicable for a kid to also take up a sport as well
Yes they really should, childhood obesity is possibly the most dangerous time of life to have extra weight. Fat inhibits many development processes during these years and leads to health issues later in life. It's especially problematic for hormone production, as additional weight during puberty inhibits the production of testosterone and estrogen at the most important time in your life if for hormone requirement.
Not enough kids spend time outside playing and being active these days, and it's leading to an obesity epidemic of epic proportions, most of which are going to have some fairly severe health issues as they grow older.
I wish my mother would have put me on a diet. I grew up overweight as a child and was made fun of by students and teachers. My late mother would yell at me to reduce and lose weight cause she couldn't find new pants for me to wear. She was overweight herself, in middle school I weighed 259 lbs and went down to 160 lbs by the time my senior year came around. Yes, kids should go to a camp, where they are put on a reduced diet to lose weight and I'm talking from what I went with me growing up yes it was a rough life. I'm sorry about your niece cause I know the road I have been down.
I think it's borderline abusive to let that happen to a child, but also if your mom was overweight, she probably had no idea how to eat or be healthy. That's the tough part about it.
@zeitgeist057 I agree with you my mother died young at age 58, Nov 10, 2003, she did eat unhealthily so did we eat but it was going back for seconds made us gain the weight

My daughter was “chubby” when she was about 8 or 9. She would hide it using a t shirt over her bathing suit in pools. I never said anything but I myself wanted to lose weight, so I asked her if she wanted to go to a gym exercise class with me. Fifteen years later, she told me how much she suffered thinking I thought she was fat, and suffered from anxiety, low self esteem, and depression because of it. She blamed me for other things, but that one stays on my mind.
I would encourage your niece to start a healthy eating plan and watch her portions on her plate. But never mention what May cause her to lose self esteem.
@sean1234 As she grew older, into the 5th and 6th grade, she knew she had a little bit of a tummy. She wasn't really that overweight. But she lost it later in the 8th grade and 9th grade, and in college she lost much weight and was almost underweight. Of course she didn't care when she was much younger, it was when she was older that it began affecting her.
For me it’s not the dieting that needs to be tackled but the exercise side of thing.
a sensible amount of physical exercise, not sports where you stand around waiting to catch a ball, but things such as jogging, mountain biking, dance, soccer, where there is a good bit of Aerobic activity going on. Decent martial arts etc also provide a good level of exercise.
Also don’t give kids adult portions for dinner, this was often the issue I saw growing up, the husband in a heavy industry job getting the same or very similar portion as the kids, who did not get exercise.
Correct kids shouldn't be on diets but they should be eating healthy. The vast majority of the overweight kids are not getting nutritional meals, it's all convenient foods full of fats, sugars and salt made even harder if both parents work and its an easy option, if parents don't work then it's laziness on parents part.
Now topple that with how lazy kids have become, when i was a child and we knew we were going on a day trip we'd have been up at 7, washed and dressed and out the door for 9am... try getting kids up not on a school day. Also never see kids out to play anymore or out on bikes or rollerskates, just sitting at edge of road playing on phones. Dance lessons, karate lessons are expensive for some parents so how do we break a cycle of obese lazy children?
Its not diet children need it's proper foods and exercise.
I don’t think it’s wrong at all but I would not call it a diet. I as a parent would have to change my ways so that my child can also benefit and see me eating well. Parents set the example for kids in many ways. So if parents are eating bad then kids follow in the footsteps and then health issues arise. It’s best to take control now then later. It will benefit them and also it will help them do better in school with grades and in life. Overall everyone should eat better. I wouldn’t call it diet but just be more mindful of what parents and kids eat
a full on diet ehhh, parents can cut back on what they intake or eat, controlled portions and their exercise levels, more subtle ways to go about it. i met this lady at the store, there every week when i have patients in, her 5 year old little girl has to be every bit of 80 pounds, she cannot even lift her to put her in the cart a male worker does it for her, the kid just sits in the cart and eats. you watch what she does "mom" basically busy on her phone and hands her whatever she wants in the cart so the kid doesn't get outta sorts. now if mom would get off the phone and actually act like a parent there would be boundaries. you can't blame the kid, they are just an innocent bystander, a kid will always be a kid, thats a parents job to do.
No, it isn't if the kid is obese. I have a child whose weight concerns me so we restricted all juices, sodas and a major downgrade of cakes and cookies. Basically nil. All sweet treats are smoothies, herbal teas made into drinks. Loke hibiscus lemonade and so on.
Every meal include salads and dessert is tea. We also have a fairly low grain intake.
Replacing nutrient feeble foods with nutrient dense foods makes a big difference. Also, get them off the computer, console phone or whatever it is.
It also depends why. Some girls hit puberty really early making them gain a lot of weight. I would mostly leave that alone.
Respectfully, it’s worse to allow your child to get to the point in the first place. Where is the guidance at the in-between place where it is needed most? A child reaches an uhealthy weight, it becomes a problem. Then the child is damaged due to feeling they did something wrong. It could be avoided with leading by example all along.
The thing is, my parents didn’t eat bad when I was growing. My mom cooked and it was never anything extremely unhealthy. I have no idea how I got that big at all. It baffles me. Once I got older the weigh melted off the summer before my sophomore year of highschool. I know it’s not genetic because both my parents growing up were very slim. I was just a really fat teen
Not a doctor, but know just enough that many things could cause it outside of control too.
That’s true. I’ve been gaining weight over the last year after maintaining my weight for years and I found out I have a health condition that’s causing me to gain and it sucks but getting her to a doctor first would be ideal. Growing up I saw a nutritionist and a doctor pretty often. It’s like one time I went to the doctor I was 187 lbs fast forward a whole summer and I’m 123. Granted I was doing some unhealthy things to lose weight but it worked.
Have you had a check-up lately? Maybe there is a new cause? Losing weight in an unhealthy way is scary. Try not to be hard on yourself Take care of you.
Oh, good. I hope it’s something you can work out easily.
Part of being a parent is teaching good nutritional habits in my opinion. Dunno why being healthy is so controversial these days, might save someone's feelings right now but potentially rob them of 20 years of life by encouraging this crap.
In no way am I saying people should be treated poorly but this shouldn't be condoned either.
I hitv almost 300lbs last year and am almost down to 200lbs now with my goal being 170. It's doable. Anyone that doesn't either has a medical condition preventing them or they're lazy.
what is wrong in the first place is to put children on a diet that makes them unhealthy... whether is way underweight, or very overweight, malnutrition, anemic... unhealthy diets should be avoided in the first place
but if the children are already unhealthy then yes, you do have to consult with a professional and do something about it because this is mostly about their health first
Not wrong at all. Worst, it may be required.
A diet is nothing more than a restrictive menu, either in quantity or quality, either taking items off or mandating them in.
As good examples are diets for food allergy or intolerance.
And congratulations to your parents, they raised someone who could control her own impulses, you don't need to put your kid in a diet if you kid already does it.
One good example is mine, my parents didn't even made the meals most of the time, and up to this day I'm very conscious about what I put in the meal, be it for me or for other people.
The parents aren't supposed to put the child on a diet because they were never supposed to let their child get fat in the first place. I can see it now... NEWS AT 11, parents get arrested after their 11 year old child dies of a heart attack from weighing 190lbs!!!
I would not put a single child on a diet. I would talk with the mother and agree that the whole family goes in on a new lifestyle. Healthy food, and go on hickes and what not. Also let the kids be in on making the food, so they learn how to make food. Take pride in the food that have been made. Also candy is ONLY on Saturdays, and only a small bowl of it. If there is a problem, then it's the whole familys problem.
No. It’s the parents responsibility to monitor what their kids are eating, parents should never allow their kids to get to that point in the first place.
I have a daughter and it’s not hard to simply say no when she asks for extra snacks or asks to go to McDonald’s.
but since it’s not your kid, just be careful because her parents might get offended by you telling them how to raise their kid 🥴
It’s parents responsibility to care for the physical emotional financial and educational needs… that includes disciplinary action as needed. So yes. And putting on a diet doesn’t need to be punishment. Leave kids to their own devices in this world is recipe for disaster. Schools are awful.
Reality is some parents are not good and child must take responsibility.
This is just my personal view, so feel free to disagree. I believe that ADULTS should absolutely be put on diets. But not children (unless we're just talking about cutting out desserts. Because sugar is absolutely harmful.) I think that, instead, children should be put on an exercise program. Their bodies are growing, so they NEED to eat. Just make them stay physically fit by working off those calories.
It's not wrong, it's the right thing to do.
Obesity is quite bad for children, particularly during that 11~15 years of age period while they are going through puberty.
It's bad for joints, bone health, overall body growth and the excess body fat will throw their hormones out of whack which can affect their puberty and even reproductive health (particularly in girls).
It's pretty much setting up a child for health issues later in life and it should definitely be addressed.
Hell No. And just recently, having watch the Hannibal trilogy, I be got the perfect DIET TOOL 🎭 for you. And if it’s a Fsmily or Genetic 🧬 issue then there’s a couple more…. Whole Family ought to be just in time for Halloween. Pork back up 🦃 to 🎄…. 🎅

@sean1234 thank you as in the name of Safety and Long-term Health, thats what I was trying to do🙃. For real though, the best Diet Plans ever is the Hannibal Mask🎭.-IF ONE sticks that tongue out the blades or prongs around the mask 🎭 mouth prevent eating.
-There’s enough room for water or whatever Supplemental necessary for survival over the 90 day period. Even if you want to reward, given appropriate walking and weight loss, getting that thing back on would be an act of Congress…unless DayLight Savings Time.
🤷🏻♂️
I feel like it’s the parents responsibility and they should view it in a way of being healthy.. They need to care more about her risk factors, heart disease, diabetes, heart attack, clogged arteries, etc… All of that leads to so many illnesses and it can be reduced by maintaining your weight and supporting a healthy diet.
I don’t believe it lowers there self esteem if it’s done right, as a parent your child’s health is priority, your job is to teach them through example how they should care for themselves as they get older. It is not healthy for child to be so over weight, and it is shitty as an adult for them to have to learn to eat healthy when they could have learned early on.
It's wrong to allow a child to eat such an unhealthy diet for so many years that they become so overweight. Genetics play a role. It may be difficult to keep weight off. A healthy attitude towards eating and food shouldn't lower self esteem. We as a society are not kind towards overweight people. That will lower self esteem. Don't even start on the inevitable negative health effects. I see no down side to dieting and sharing experiences with a loving aunt.
diets for children are useless. diets for the childs parents would likely be healthier for this girl. the vast majority of childhood obesity is the fault of the parents over endulgent lack of decent parenting skills. so put the parents on a diet she will lose weight by proxy.
Absolutely not wrong. If it benefits their health then in fact it should be encouraged. There is a way of doing it though to ensure that the child doesn’t feel bad or pressured while dieting
It’s more important to make sure your kids are active. When you exercise regularly you tend to want to eat healthier. Your body recognizes this is important for performance.
I would get your kids involved with sports first. In the beginning it will be tough for them. But force them to stick it out for one season. They might start seeing positive changes in their body and that will help motivate them to diet better.
Diet is a crazy word for some people when really a diet isn't anything crazy for anyone at any age. There is no neglect if you put a child on a diet. It's all about eating healthy food. Watching how much you consume. Making sure you are still getting your proper daily vitamins. And getting proper exercise.
My parents only let me eat at meal times or if I asked permission. Some foods like bread and crackers I could eat whenever, but anything prepackaged or a dessert was off limits. I don't think that was wrong or really a diet. I had fat cousins that would sit on the sofa eating a bag of Doritos and I could never understand why their parents thought that was ok.
You pretty much stated a case for putting an overweight child on a diet. Usually, not always, an obese child becomes and stays an obese adult.
I went to HS with on guy who was very overweight. He never changed and went on into law enforcement and because of his weight, he was taken off the street and put on a desk job.
If she were my kid I would first have her doctor check her for any underlying conditions that may exist. If there were none, I'd have her doctor create a plan for her to achieve a healthy weight. This may involve including a nutritionist and a personal trainer.
I think it's wrong to let them get to that stage in the first place. There's a point where a little chubby becomes obese and there ought to be parental intervention before that comes around. In most cases its a simple equation, control the calories going in and encourage activity to increase calorie usage.
I'm sorry but the pic took me tf out 🤣🤣 @Pink2000 why?
Anyways, no it's not wrong. My family said the same shit about my cousin, "oh its gone fall off." Well it didn't she still eating and she had a kid so now she just wobbling around.
Omg she's that big?
Omfg what is she eating🤣🤦🏽♀️? They need to stop her now while she's young
U know how grandmas are ," come here baby lemme feed you. " 😩
Adults should teach kids what's good food and what isn't. The goal is to have the kid WANTING to eat fruit and veggies instead of junk food and carbs (although wanting carbs is natural especially if you've got a growing body). I have literally no practice though; when I was a kid I was often called slim jim because I was skinny.
It shouldn't be a diet it should be a change in lifestyle. Parents are responsible for the health and wellbeing of their children, and the definitely includes what and how much is being put into their bodies. If a child was malnourished, CPS would get involved for good reason, but if a child is morbidly obese... people tend to turn a blind eye.
I don't know about wrong. I think on the case of kids with weight problems it's probably more a example of allowing too many sedentary activities i. e. video games. I ran and ran and ran as a kid. I never even started to put on any weight till Jr. High. But that's usually where you start maturing and you don't go out and play anymore.
@ragooo8 not if they're burning it all of. I drank a ton of pop as a kid. It didn't catch up to me till later. As far as the huge portions most kids don't they're kids. Most kids don't even want to sit still long enough to eat. You have to remember kids need a lot of calories when they're young because their growing.
Not wrong. A child should not be fat. This is bad for health & self-image. No teenager (especially) feels good about being fat. They may dislike the restrictions, but if argumentation is continuously provided ("here is why we are doing this"), I think the child would be fine.
Lmao! I'm sorry but that pic. I was never fat cause I played sports all my life but if it's for health issues yeah it's okay to put a kid on a diet especially now a day when kids don't do anything but play video game and childhood obesity and diabetes is at a all time high
As former fat child, it is wrong NOT to put them on a diet. Or more like the better way is to teach them to enjoy exercise and sport, and go for a run before reach for the sweets , and teach them to like healthier food choices.
I’m a lazy ass reader so only read the title;
I think it’s a good idea to put a child on a healthy eating plan AS LONG as your not restricting them. Simply change crisps to a piece of fruit and chips to baked potato.
If the kid is seriously bigger than normal, then I would say no, nothing wrong with it. Children should be active so doing what you can to put them at a healthy weight is perfectly fine.
No, it's the kind thing to do, but people kill with kindness, that's were billing begins, so think before you give your child what they want. I used to give my son a burger king every 2 weeks as a treat. There has to be boundaries when it comes to feeding. A health cooked meal will give them a sense of being full up.
it's fine to put someone on a diet if they're unhealthy, as long as you're not being a bitch about it and not starving them, or completely cutting out sugar.
Kids should learn from young age about a healthy diet, either by class, parents or diet if they are too fat. You want your kid to be healthy physically and mentally. Fatness will cause him to be different and kids will be mean to him, and he will be less active and meet less kids.
That's not a long-term solution to just slap a diet on your child. If you really care, take the time to prepare healthy meals with them so that they permanently get into that habit.
No. Parents in the UK were just charged with manslaughter for letting their daughter get so fat she died. There were probably other circumstances than just the weight but allowing her to get like that was seen as neglect that caused her death. The first charge of this kind ever.
If your child is fat outside of a health condition it is the parents fault for letting them over eat or giving them junk food. Just stop those two actions.
If it's for their own health it's necessary but a diet they actually like. Otherwise you should talk to them and explain why it's good for them and let them decide.
Children should be on a diet of healthy foods from birth. If they become overweight, a restrictive diet (under pediatrician's advice and care) is very appropriate.
Diets are overall unhealthy for everyone. Lifestyle changes are what is needed. Cutting out junk and eating healthier plus exercising.
I think it's wrong to not put a child on a healthy diet. The quality of their development is extremely dependent on what they consume.
No, unless it's some I am a bad parent who calls my kid fat when there skinny and gives them self body issues deal.
I would simply not feed him so they got fat in the first place. Best is to teach them good habits than requiring diets.
As long as it isn't extreme diet. For kids physical exercise is the best along with healthy diet. Weight won't fall off unless you work in it.
there is no excuse for a parent letting a kid get fat. that is 110% the fault of the parent. shame on them.
They should be on a diet because being obese can damage their health. No other aspect of this matters.
If you want to eat a ton of food, raise your metabolism, otherwise diet.
If a child is overweight, I see nothing wrong with putting him or her on a diet. That’s a very appropriate thing to do under those circumstances.
Is it wrong? No.
But I think you have to careful. Bc they are still growing. I think just eating better and getting outside more will help.
I doubt unless she is huge, you need to count calories or anything. That can become obsessive
Kids aren't born fat.
Curse the parents who allow them to get to this point.
It should not have happened in the first place.
Nothing wrong with it as long as your compassionate towards the child as your only helping them in the long run to avoid serious health complications.
As long as you're not bullying the child about their weight, it's better to put them on a diet. Get help and guidance from doctors and therapists so as you don't mentally harm them.
If its the difference between death and loosing a weight I'd always choose a diet.
No it's not. Letting your child stay obese is wrong.
You can sure do a playful diet for children and fun exercises with them. Parents should take care of their children and their health. And major respect that you did it by yourself 🙏🏼
I don’t think it’s wrong I think you’re helping you kid before they get older and it becomes harder to lose that weight and break habits.
