-30 to 60 minutes of cardio a day such as running, jogging, speed walking, swimming, jump roping and any other cardiovascular activity which gets your heart pumping. For someone who is obese such as your friend, I recommend starting out slow. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with gradually adding cardio and increasing the intensity.
-Eat healthy. Don't deprive yourself of your favorite foods, but eat them in moderation. Too much of something can be bad. Try to incorporate more fruits and veggies, replacing unhealthy sides with steamed veggies and replacing sweet snacks every now and then with fruit.
-Do NOT diet. You simply want to make lifestyle changes, because unless you plan on staying on a particular diet for life, you'll end up gaining the weight back. Lifestyle changes>dieting. Lifestyle changes just means eating healthier and making healthier decisions.
-Consult your physician. We aren't professionals on here and when you're obese, it's best to consult your physician for help.

If she goes for a quick fix or a a fad diet, she'll probably end up gaining the weight back. It may not be really fast, but she should alter her diet to a balanced one and start a daily exercise routine combining aerobics and strength training. Have her educate herself on health and diet topics like the different kinds of calories, super foods, the glycemic index, exercises for weight loss, etc.
Also I would recommend replacing her drinks with water, people usually intake a lot of bad, extra juice calories, sugars, etc from sodas and juices. By replacing them with water she'll probably feel better and have an easier time with her new healthy lifestyle.
Start out with diet alone. At her current weight there really aren't any forms of exercise she can safely do without destroying her joints, so for right now do it through diet alone. Tell her to cook her own food rather than eating out, use lowfat ingredient substitutes whenever possible, and cut out all drinks except for water. Come back and post an update to this question if she's done this and stuck to it.
Diet
Exercise at least 3 times a week.
I of course am not expert t though so I have no details on what to do exactly. She might be able to lose some with out a diet change or at least tone up but she'll flat line eventually and then be forced to. Big guys/girls will at least lose something without a diet change because that size has to come from doing nothing. I would know I'm around 300lbs.

She should watch what she eats, it's very hard to lose this much weight quickly unless she has insane personal trainers like biggest loser" if she counts the calories in what she eats and only fulfills the amount she needs daily and not over eat while exercising she might be able to do it. I suggest that she goes and ask a doctor.
Best, easiest, and fastest = diet and exercise. There is no easy way out. There's no magic pill. It takes a ton of determination. It takes a ton of will power.
Tell your friend to significantly reduce her daily caloric intake and start by simply walking a mile every day.
Send her this link too:

Well tell her to start her exercise routine slow at first like walking, swimming, or cycling. After she gains stamina, she can start other cardio routines like jogging/running etc. and eating right. With determination everything is possile. She isn't going to lose 170 pounds very easily. She needs to change her diet, level of exercise, and overall lifestyle. It won't happen in a year or 2 or 3 its going to take long-term dedication.
swimming pple say is the best excerise.
Stop eating.
starve yourself.
