How is it possible for a woman to still have periods past age 50?

This happened to both my maternal great-grandmother and her daughter (grandma). By the time they finally stopped having their periods, they were 58 and 60 years old. Weird

How is that possible? How can a woman still have periods when she's 50?

It's very possible. The majority goes by genetics. A woman can be in perimenopause for 10 years. In perimenopause, hormones are fluctuating and a woman can have a regular period but then go several months without having a period. This phase of menopause is very deceiving and so women don't take it seriously so they blindly think they are in full-on menopause and they stop all birth control. Then they end up with a change-of-life baby. Also the older you are when your periods fully stop, which is classified as not having a period in a year increases breast cancer risks by 30%.

Thank you for the information. I'll make a note of the last sentence. Wow... everything has a catch after all; more fertility years but at the cost of an increase risk of breast cancer. I found out recently my egg count is a lot higher than the average woman my age. I'm going to get checked up once a year to prevent diseases or detect them on time.

Bodies have different time zones. There was a 60 year old mother who gave birth to twins on the news and the doctor who helped her get pregnant had his license suspended.

I know one lady who didn't start menopause until 56. It is an individual thing.

Conversely, I know a lady who went into menopause at 39.

Perhaps it is on a bell-shaped curve?

Interesting. Do you think it has something to do with being born with a higher egg count? I was curious about my egg count, got tested and it's a lot higher than average even for a girl my age. I suppose this means my fertility is longer than average and I'm going to be having periods for a lot longer.

Interesting. I went to see my egg count and turns out I have a much higher count than the average 19-20 year-old woman. I was apparently born with a higher egg count. I guess that must be the case with several female in my family. Plus we started our periods late too; ages 15 and 16.
