Trending & News I learned to swim while I was drowning, lol... by the beach
and yes, I do remember that very unsettling feeling of not being able to see anything, and being dragged in all directions seemingly, without a top or bottom... while not being able to breathe properly, or at all, that was a bit of panic...
luckily for me, I was able to 'give up" and try to fight that panic, managed to wait till things calmed down a bit... as soon as I felt some sand with one hand, I tried to reach the bottom of the beach's sand with both hands... and then both my legs, and that felt a lot less awful, and I could start to try an attempt to "swim" or make it away from current under the water that kept pulling me, and as soon as I was not feeling that pull, I started to swim up to the surface... just on the other direction from the sand at the bottom, lol
I could do swimming like that, I am able to... I just rather not
@Pinay_ako lmao... yeah, next thing I remember is me at the surface trying not to choke on all that salty water I swallowed and people in the jet skies telling me wtf are you doing all the way here? lol
If you can touch the bottom, you aren't swimming.
My neighbor had a pool when I was growing up, so I learned how to swim at an early age. I also lived near the ocean and learned to body surf and belly board when I was older.
And I started surfing when I was 13 or 14. That was before surf boards had ankle tethers, so if you fell off your board, if was wash all the way to shore and you had to swim in to retrieve it.
So I'm a good swimmer and also know how to stay afloat if I get tired.
I didn't worry too much about what other creatures were in the ocean. The chances of a shark attack were extremely remote where I lived. I did get stung by jelly fish, though. That's not much fun.
Definitely in the pool, I am fine with that. But when you are in the middle of the ocean sometimes it's a little unnerving.
Story time:
I was 17, so two years ago, we were at a beach far from my house. I was with two guy friends. However, it was moderately raining, nothing too intense, not a storm. So, under my 17-year-old guidance, I said, "I'm swimming." The guys followed me, and we went pretty far out. (God, I swear only two years ago I was an idiot, haha). So being in the water, the water was very murky and pretty far out. I was a little unnerved because there are some sharks in those waters. Though we survived, and I didn't die of a heart attack. Though swimming while it's raining, is my favorite.
I grew up country, NOT knowing what's in the water with me doesn't bother me as much as KNOWING. I'll jump off a boat or into any creek except the one that runs through our ranch because I know there are water moccasins and alligator gar in there, along with 8' catfish... But anywhere else, I'll strip down to my undies and jump in in a heartbeat.
As for not being able to touch, I don't care much about that either, swimming a hundred yards to shore is a "been there done that" thing... Tiring, but that's kinda what you gotta do when the Sea-Doo breaks down and your (now ex) boyfriend doesn't stop!

As long as you have enough stamina, there's no need to worrying about not touching the bottom. One of my best swims was along the florida beach, right offshore where the dropoff was about 60 feet and swimming right below me were barracuda and all manner of fish in lovely clear water. It was like a living, giant aquarium! Beautiful.
Yes but I'm always conscious of how far I am from shore, and the strength of the current. I'm not a strong swimmer so I stay within fairly conservative limits. In calmer waters like when I've been to Greece, I'll swim further out without problem. But in the south of England those currents can really sneak up on you.
I don't advise getting into ocean water at all. UNLESS you know what you are doing. One of my friends from HS got caught up in a rip current and finally died. Most of the time unless you are in places Like Florida and along the swampy areas along the Gulf of Mexico being in a lake should pose no serious danger from "critters". Deep water does not bother me. I am lifeguard certified and I am a certified SCUBA Rescue Diver. Before I moved to Virginia I was an on-call rescue diver for one of the Metro Atlanta Counties.
I grew up near beaches and the ocean - and have always been comfortable with both of those notions but I know many people who are not.
Will say it's funny that the GaG disclaimer "This content is for informational purposes only. Do not use for purposes of medical treatment." Be funny to think if someone actually used any of the replies hear for medical treatment lol
We're 4th in the nation for shark attacks, and here's the thing: even if you could see them, they're in the water all day and swim 40 mph. So, I just think of it like a lightning storm -- there's safe place to be. I don't swim in the morning during breakfast or when the sun is going down. Other guys around here, well they'll just wrestle a shark they don't give a shit.
At my family home, we live about 50 metres from the sea. I would never swim in it because of all the polution from the passing ships. Ya never know what crap gets thrown overboard!
Hey just do it. You can measure the depth of River or pool then you can say proudly this pool has depth more than me. I think touching bottom of the river that is give good experience to you, Your skills are increase.
You will get great courage.
I don't mind being unable to touch bottom, so long as I can easily swim to a place where I can grab onto something or touch bottom. In a pool, for example, swimming to the side of the pool. In open water, swimming to a boat.
In my opinion, if anybody doesn't know how to swim (Beginner) or have issues with swimming or the Ocean (just likes Lake or Rivers), do not jump in the water especially if its a place or area that you don't know or uncomfortable with especially in the night where you cannot see whats in the water or public place without not life guard. Safety, Being Cautious, are keys to survival and avoiding danger.
I prefer not to touch the bottom. That’s where stinging things live
Have to agree, weaverfish are plentiful here.
Stingrays and all sorts of poisonous coral critters here
Look don’t touch
We've got stingrays but I've never been fortunate enough to see one
Yes I’d be comfortable but a little bit afraid. Is this the sea or a very deep pool? Can I actually swim deep and touch the bottom?
For me it´s like I can swim when I can´t touch bottom as long as I´m able to see what´s under me. If not water is really muddy I can get umcomfortable especially in the occean.
I can understand both of those reasons, but I've swam my whole life in such waters, so it doesn't bother me.
I was brought up on the ocean so none of this bothers me.
I don't mind swimming when I can't touch the bottom. I'm just less into it in many UK coastal waters because my primary concern is I shouldn't have to avoid human shit, used condoms and tampons. Other than that it's all good.
i can float really well 🤣 my way of swimming back and forth though resembles a dog or a frog. but no prob in the sea. I like the water to clear it's a bit disgusting if there are figs and sand not appealing to swim in.
NGL I was thinking "Isn't that sexual assault?"
"Has Baywatch taken people so far they can't swim without touching the others bottom?"
A classic example of more context needed...
I am, I'm a pretty good swimmer. It doesn't bother me at all
Doesn't bother me. In a swimming pool, I can dive to the bottom, In the ocean there may not be a bottom or it may be way to deep to dive. However, you don't sink in salt water.
I've been swimming since many years and I'm really good at it , sooooo, probably yes I am comfortable with it ahaha , it still scares me sometimes tho
I don't mind either of those but it's probably because I grew up swimming in lakes.
I'm not a huge fan of seaweed though. 😅
I have been since that included the shallow end of a swimming pool.
I’m very comfortable in the water. I can swim at any depth without issue
No, and I don't like sea/lake swimming because of all the creatures.
I agree 100% I saw the movie... "JAWS" when it 1st came out, swimming pools for me from then on...
I'm fine with it. If I'm worried about what's under than I'll in advance check on the internet what the sea has at that place.
I prefer it a little closer, but yes, I can tread water well enough that I feel comfortable.
Yeah, we had a 9' deep section in our pool and it was never a problem for me. If I stood on the bottom and stuck my hand up, my fingers would stick out of the water.
Yeah, because i'm able to swim. Last time I swam was for exercise. It felt good and didn't need to touch the bottom.
I’m a fairly strong swimmer, so depth and low visibility don’t bother me. But i hate me some seaweed!
I'm sure my total time in the ocean exceeds 1 year of combined time, so, yeah, I'd say that I was comfortable.
Yes as long as I’m not that far off from the shore 🤣. Scared 😱 of sharks and shit 😂
It’s risk. Those things are fun when you survive.
Of course! It has to be that deep for me to be able to dive.
Those not comfortable with not being able to touch bottom should really improve their swimming/floating/treading skills. Enhanced skills also greatly improve confidence.
I didn't work on my swimming until my 20s.
Never too late.
If I can't touch the bottom or a wall or smth then I am not comfortable because I can only tread a couple minutes max
Yup I'm comfortable. Now that I actually think about it, I never check if I touch the bottom. I dive from the steps😅
Yes without any concerb whatsoever besides shark 🦈
I can swim well but don’t like swimming in deep water or water can’t see in. Thank Jaws for that.
Yes if course! It doesn't matter if you can touch the bottom of the pool or not!
Yes, I am fine with swimming in deep water.
Afterall being able to swim is a standard in my country, we are taught how to swim from our 3rd year of age, until our 10th.
Yes. I grew up by the ocean so we never had much bottom to touch lol
Practice practice practice.
If you can actually SWIM, you don't need to touch the bottom. :)
well, no because I know what's down there and I'm ascared of sea monsters, lake monsters, and even some deep water swimming pool monsters. 🐢
Yes I am. I just need to be able to see the bottom.
Absolutely. I actually prefer it when I cannot touch or see the bottom.
Yes, I swam competitively for years before becoming a lifeguard
I always prefer to swim in pools, I don't like water that has fish and stuff in it. I feel about the same as not being able to what's in the water. Not touching the bottom doesn't bother me if I'm in a pool.
It's not real swimming until you're staring into an unfathomable abyss.
Yes that's why learning gow to float is so important. I could lay on my back in deep end pool.
I swam and dived all my life and I’m 5’4 Im very comfy
I don't mind a swimming pool but the ocean is scary af! Lol
I've never swam in the ocean. I have swam lakes.
It doesn't bother me. It's more of a work out when you can't touch the bottom
Yeah. I was on the high-school swim team.
But I will say swimming in something vast (like the open ocean) spooks me a bit.
I am a certified diver, I love the swim in the deep waters...
No, nut several friends have that phobia. One won't swim in any water he can’t see through.
Never had a problem with this.
Sharks
Sharks live in all seas, even the really cold ones
No, I wouldn't be comfortable with that.
