We had a guy one of our cooks overdose and pass out in the kitchen. One of the waiters told me to call 911 while some of the kitchen staff were working on him to get him to breathe. When the fire department and ambulance arrived, they Narcaned him back. But after learning what happened he turns out he was refusing to go to the hospital and was mad we called 911 on him and saved his life. The dude was dead for a few minutes he was literally blue and black. If that was me I would be greatful I got another chance at life.
+1 yYa. You probably would be grateful. But that's you and your mind and your thoughts you're predicting.
It's a huge waste of time trying to guess why someone does this or doesn't do that based solely on what you would or wouldn't do.
Did you not consider he's an opioid addict?
That maybe he used drugs to self-medicate for past traumas and addiction took over so now his life is so much worse? How hopeless and painful his future seems to him? How even further out of control he is now than when he started using?
Have you ever witnessed a 2-week opioid withdrawal? 48 hours without a fix becomes absolute hell and induces a state of panic in the user to get high ASAP to quell what's coming. That cycle, and the absolutely complete control the dope has over you, can make waking up tomorrow feel like the worst thing that could happen to you.
I don't condone suicide except in cases of medical end-of-life decisions, but I understand it. It's very likely he truly wanted to die. Maybe to experience the euphoria of the high then fade away unaware of death's approach.
Empathy isn't always a trait. Sometimes it takes a little effort to cultivate01 Reply- +1 y
Actually I haven't and I've never seen overdose like that in person. I just called 911 like one of my coworkers asked me to. Fortunately we had two customers who were MPs who helped to also save his life

+1 yI can't say this particular person felt this exact way, but let me paint you a possible hypothetical scenario:
Joe Blow is living a pretty unhappy life. He hates his job, hates his life, is very depressed. He's addicted to morphine, and really looks forward to the next time he can get high. His life sucks, and morphine is an incredible euphoric feeling that feels like he died and went to heaven and is just having a fantastic near-orgasmic experience.
Joe has to work hard to save up some money to buy this morphine. He buys some and it's burning a hole in his pocket while he's at work. He can hardly wait to get home and shoot up, to feel amazing instead of miserable. In fact, he CAN'T wait, and decides to shoot up while at work. He finds a private spot, does his ritual, and is floating on a cloud of bliss.

Next thing he knows, he's back at work. Dead sober, with a headache and EMT/paramedics around him. Trying to pressure him to take an ambulance ride to the hospital which he is certain would cost a lot of money he'd rather spend on more morphine. Damn, he's sober. They narcan'd him and took away his beautiful high. He's so pissed off at the world right now.

THIS. And I sadly suspect he wanted to go out on a "high" and this was a suicide attempt.

Life is often appreciated and valued when things are going well, when you have a stable job that allows you to afford lifes necessities, when you have a good relationship, when your family is loving and kind, when you have friends to live life with, and when your health is good. Knock one of those down, several of those down, it can be a tough road where one can feel the only way out is to take their own life.

Maybe he believes some specific religion? I know Jehova witness are like this they don’t want to get saved bc they think they cheated death or something like this. I have distant family members who are believers of Jehova and they have a bracelet in their hand in case if something happens they don’t want to get saved or have surgery or even blood transfusion nothing let them die as it is…

Some people don't value life as much as others. I don't know what people are going through so I try not to pass judgment too much. The reality is some people just don't have the determination to keep going. It's sad. It's sad bc life is a big thing that shouldn't be tossed. But people do it to escape their struggles and shit. It's always a weird topic because the person knows what their will is, and they wanna go through with it. But it's so wrong to end your own life because things can always make a turn for the better
00 Reply1.4K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. Considering he was was a cook he's probably thinking " I couldn't afford to live before. Now I have to work that much more for the life I already can't afford, the addiction to opiates, and now the medical bill on top of it". I've never been addicted to anything ( other than Pepsi 🤣). So I can't relate. But I have heard a lot of junkies say they hope one if these times they'd just die. That life probably does get exhausting after a while.

+1 yCause some people take life for granted and probably don't feel like life is worth living. When people are lost and depressed, they tend to not care as much as they use to. It's possible life has thrown them a lot of curve balls and they feel like death is the only option for them to have a break/peace. Plus he probably wasn't feeling that great and was just coming off the high, so he could just been out of it and moody.

+1 yNurse here. I've had friends in our ED and a friend that's a cop tell me that that is more common than you think.
They told me the person is pissed off that the Narcan ruined their high.

u +1 yI think you should be more considerate with a person that is obviously in a very deep troubled state of mind and also a dark time in their life, don't you think?
either an addict or suicidal... he's not right the most sane either, so how do you expect to do the "right thing to do"04 Reply- +1 y
Well when I saw he was passed out the waiter told me to call 911 and we didn't know at the time he'd OD'd till someone brought it up. We thought we were just saving a man fron a medical emergency
- +1 y
and you had all this time to think about it and realize that... that is a person at the edge of life and not having the best time of his life either
and yet, you make it about yourself and got all upset because you didn't get a "thank you" lol... - +1 y
I mean if you saw someone passed out would you not have called 811 if someone asked you to?
- +1 y
of course... but I would never expect a medal or for them to say THANK YOU
it is just the right thing to do, lol

Pd can chapter him and take him in for treatment, esp after almost dying.
We have 1 girl that we have brought back 17 or 18 times.
She crashed her car at our fire station 1 day.
She couldn't even do that correctly, she missed our sign by less than a foot, otherwise we would have 1 of those nice digital ones.

His girlfriend who was in there with him at the time didn't actually act concerned either like she wasn't panicking or going crazy like you would expect most people to do if it was a life and death situation

+1 yThis might be an over simplification, but some people like asparagus and some don't. You assume that everyone likes life, or should like life. But not everyone does. A lot of people just don't fit. This thing called life doesn't work for everyone. People think that everyone should like life, and if they don't there is something wrong. But thinking they "should" like life has nothing to do with what is or isn't.

+1 yMaybe respect that everyone has their own lives and reasons for behavior. Not everything is seen from a healthy perspective either. Especially crashing off high levels of drugs.
20 ReplyHe doesn't seem to want to live. Although if this was an attempted suicide, why did he go to work? It would have succeeded if he had stayed home with no one to revive him.

And if someone sees someone passed out who isn't gonna call 911?
1.9K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. You presume that they have a life they want to live. Obligations to live life, is nothing to be grateful for.

When you hear about people fighting for and even dying for a deserving cause, do you think of what you are not doing with your life?
