Does having a strict routine every day help you?

I've tried different time management strategies or ‘habits’ like time boxing. I find that they really help get a lot done and manage stressful periods, however they’re also the fastest way to make me depress as I feel like a robot and I feel like it suppresses much spontaneity. What’s your sweet spot? Do you have habits that really work well over the long term?
