Yes, although they don't know it. Your immune system getting lots of practice is what makes it strong; this is what War of the Worlds was about.
On a more terrestrial level, it's where many of the deathly serious peanut allergies we're seeing among children comes from; hideously overprotective parents making the well-intentioned but idiotic decision to stop their kids from playing in the mud and eating sand leads them to having no immune system priorities worth mentioning.

In Germany we say "Dreck macht Speck" literally translated it means dirt makes fat pad but it just means that kids through playing in the mud and etc they yeah get sick but also build an immune system
