Medical screenings for exposure are being conducted within a 30 mile radius. Cincinnati is 66 miles away from Palestine. The farm they were picked from might be even further away. That said vinyl chloride which is primarily used for making polyvinyl chloride (i. e. PVC like the pipes in your house that transport your water that you drink and bath in every day) is going to kill you in small amounts from a single exposure. Long term exposure like if you work in a plastic factory for many years can have negative effects on your health. Short term exposure to extreme amounts of the chemical would be bad, like if you were right next to the train crash wading in the stuff without protective gear. Not that any of that is a concern given that it was combusting in the fucking fire. Stop being so hysterical...

The reason people are being screened locally is because the products of the reaction of HCL otherwise known as hydrochloric acid or meratic acid like the stuff you put in your pool. This is why people were worried about acid rain. Phosgene which when inhaled can cause irritation of the throat and lungs and potentially lead to respiratory and cardiovascular failure as well as carbon dioxide. So if you were in the immediate vicinity of the accident huffing the emitted gas you could be exposed to toxic gases and corrosive chemicals that can cause chemical burns and other health problems.

@Leopard23 Nope, I'm not vaccinated with the experimental COVID vaccine. I just know what vinyl chloride is. It's transported under pressure in large tanks as a liquid. During a train wreck those tanks would rupture spilling it onto the ground. Once at atmospheric pressure it would gradually sublimate into the atmosphere. It is an extremely flammable gas. In the presence of a large train fire it would burn creating the products I mentioned. Obviously not all of it will burn perfectly. It's not a contained reaction. That said when not in the presence of a fire source it is relatively stable for the most part. Oxidizing agents like ozone which is found in the atmosphere would react with it creating formyl chloride and formic acid both of which are corrosive and can cause eye damage and respirator irritation and damage. If you would have actually studied chemistry you would know things like this...

I don't know for certain that is what was on the train, but if it were then that's what you'd be dealing with. It wouldn't be out of place for vinyl chloride to be shipped in pressurized tanks with a destination in Ohio. So the stuff passes through the state by rail every single day.

That said, it's not a solid that lands on blue berries that were likely picked before the explosion sitting in cold storage at some packaging plant to be shipped out for the question asker consumption. Logical thinking can conclude that the berries are safe to eat. It's not a big fucking deal. The acid rain that results from the chemical accident will obviously impact surrounding water ways and aquatic populations after it precipitates and lands in the water shed. But none of that has anything to do with blueberries picked maybe 2 weeks ago.
