Which exercise program is more effective to achieve toned and slim body?

According to exercise and sports professionals (trainers, physical education teachers, etc).

Many repetitions with little weight, Few reps with heavy weights? Or this other type of exercise: Isometrics (only muscle contraction) or a combination of all of them, variety in different days?

Or that depends on the goal of each individual?

I dont mean to get all big and bulky just to have a nice toned, defined body.
