It's a form of compulsive thought linked to the ego. Most people have been programmed to think this way because it keeps them from discovering their true power. Our true way of thinking is in not thinking at all for long periods of time... stillness. Anonymous says 'we all do it' because most of us have been programmed to. I no longer do this because I reprogrammed it through learning how to stop thinking.
Try to find it funny. "What an idiot!" You know, like that.
I think some degree of shame is good but not when you hold it way longer than anyone else. We keep transforming in our lives. People can switch to opposite sides of the political spectrum like becoming conservatives (usually the smart ones move in this direction; someone moving more left/liberal at 30+ is probably a clown), even go all the way from vanilla to chocolate ice cream as their favorite.
I think the most regret-ridden people don't acknowledge this very well: a person grows past their mistakes.
We all do. I just went to my therapist today and discussed my regrets.
