I don't make a habit of it but, sometimes I'll take a look. There's nothing wrong with that. It could alert you to something going on inside that you might, otherwise, never know anything about. Like, if your shit comes out black, it means you're bleeding inside. Wouldn't you prefer to know that BEFORE it becomes a major issue or kills you?

My wife and I worked in Clinical pathology for 50 years. If we are having problems, we look. Itchy ass, look for worms. Pale pink gums, look for blood in your stool. Gastric pain, look for black stool (melina) evidence of an ulcer. No problems , send it on it's way

Light tan versus dark brown can indicate gall bladder problems. Too many days of difficult to move stools and tan color? A fatty meal is in order. Color should return to brown. However loose stools move fast and the color change has not had time to occur.

Ya know, my stools changed color over a week ago to light tan, and haven't changed back to my normal brown color. It can't be due to my gallbladder because mine was removed 20+ years ago.
Think it's my liver?

Bile takes time to transition from tan to brown. Have you been hypermotile lately. Your liver is still manufacturing bile which can stagnate and form concretions which can block a duct.
