Depression and sadly to say it’s a form of mental illness as well , mainly because the person that is suicidal is only thinking about themselves and not caring about how other’s feel about them , they hate their life , they are unhappy , they are sad and angry , When someone tells you they are going to kill themselves , you have a choice on whether you want to help them or just walk away and think that’s their problem not yours. Sadly a lot of people with suicidal tendencies are depressed people , they are crying for help. The only way we can help that person, is getting them the help the need , call the cops and get them 302’ed especially if they are acting on it , acting on it , by putting a gun to their head or dumping a whole bottle of pills into their mouth , whether they are joking or not , to me that isn’t a joke and you should t take it as a joke if someone is acting on it, now if someone just says they want to die and they don’t act on it? I will still try to help them by up and help them look at things differently, we all have sad feelings at times , some worse than others.

Suicidal ideation is part of the DSM criteria for Major Depression. Suicide can also be used as a form of revenge for a perceived injury (e. g. suicide bombers, which also incorporates indoctrination, brainwashing and using religion as a justification for hate). A perceived injury doesn't mean there was an injury caused.

Being suicidal is not attention seeking.. and I’m not sure how it could be based on “revenge” either. Who are you getting revenge on? Yourself? Lol. In my eyes, depression is the cause for suicide. It’s not just a little bit of “oh I’m feeling sad today, guess I’ll go take my life!”. No, it’s years of slowly drowning in your own mind, sinking lower and lower, nothing helping you to get back up, until you reach the breaking point. In no way is it attention seeking when people who are suicidal often hide it, act happy and care free, and attempt to take their life behind closed doors.

Sure, it is selfish. But so many things in life are. Taking care of your own mental health is selfish too.

@OddBeMe it’s not selfish. Selfishness is doing something for your own personal gain. A person gains nothing from ending their life. It is a final act. It goes against every natural instinct you have. By definition of selfishness, it cannot be selfish.

@Kingofkings1992 I get you, but this is where “revenge” could come in. “I’ll show them”.

So many suicides are almost teleplays they’ve constructed.

It's really not and while I've normally agreed with a lot of what you say, this is just plain wrong.
Many suicidal people want to just disappear. it's not about attention, it's about their life being so meaningless it doesn't matter if they leave it.

depression definitely and it's not attention seeking

like the best way describe it is like when you're extremely tired and just want to sleep. you know how your thinking and priorities are all different bc you just want to sleep? it's kinda like that in a way

you just wanna stop feeling the way you are every moment of the day. it becomes like an ACTUAL urge too that's hard to stop

Revenge against whom. Certainly women attempt it seeking attention.

Ultimately its usually a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Agree with the second. But suicide is a male thing. And I’d say perhaps it’s seen by them as revenge against the world or people he thinks wronged him.

Like those on gag. Just kidding.

More women attempt suicide than men, men are more successful at suicide.
Revenge against the world would be hurting others. Suicide is generally an escape for people lost in despair.

Women tend to use different means for suicide such as pills and cutting their wrists while men being more practical will hang themselves with a rope or blow their brains out with a gun.

That is true, I googled and women do attempt more. Well never know what’s in people’s heads. Perhaps guys are more into guns and their “attempt” doesn’t have a starter. Just an ended.

Well think about it. If you were going to kill yourself would you pop a bottle of pills try to open up the veins in your arms with a knife in the bath tub that may or may not kill you or would you be sure using a gun or a rope?

@msc545 a lot car and trucker crashes are probably suicides but it's hard to know. They maybe don't want the family to know or the insurance company to find out.
A school buddy's father committed suicide after losing his job and my father was talking to the mother of his widow and his widow and it was mentioned that at least they wouldn't lose the family home because of the life insurance policy, my father hadn't the heart to correct them. It was back in 2006.

I think it's more like you get into a state of mind and a state of feeling that nothing will get better, and that you and your life is worthless. It's an extremely low state of consciousness. You won't understand it unless you have been there yourself.

Being genuinely suicidal is a form of escapism. Depression is usually just the thing they are escaping from. As a revenge mechanic it's more to do with attention seeking - though most realize they won't be around to enjoy the attention and that usually stops them.

Talking about it online is attention-seeking. If it's in private or talked about among close friends or family, it's not necessarily. Depression amd rage aren't mutually exclusive.

People have talked about it online and then gone ahead and done it. Some people have made YouTube videos of themselves actually doing it.

Online does NOT mean it's attention-seeking at all. Assuming that is very dangerous.

@elaphe Depression is common; the others you mention are less so. Some people have no diagnosable mental illness and are still suicidal.

@msc545 Depressive illness is about 10% of the population over a lifetime. Bipolar is 2%, Schizophrenia 1%, and OCD 3%. So, while those three last groups are lower percents than the former, it still represents millions of people. The CDC has estimated that 70% of suicides are a direct result of depression that fits DSM diagnostic criteria. It further estimates that another 20% suffer from some other mental illness. So, in all, 90% are suffering diagnosable (and treatable) psychiatric disorders.
