Is suicide selfish?

I hear a lot of people say they think suicide is selfish, which I think is rather unfair. You assume the said person is thinking with a healthy state of mind. People who commit suicide are entirely convinced they’re loved ones are happier without them.

Depends the context of their thought process. If they just don’t want to live anymore and don’t care what anyone thinks, thats selfish, but that’s not to say that there’s anything wrong with them being selfish. Life is not pleasant for everyone. If they think those around them would be better off without them here, that’s unselfish…perhaps even altruistic as they believe they are enhancing others lives by going away. Regardless, I’m not advocating that any scenario is “wrong” or “right” but an simply an event that can occur.

I understand that people who contemplate/commit suicide have major mental health issues and, like you said, are convinced their loves ones would be happier without them but it's just simply not the case, i would be heartbroken and angry if someone i loved committed suicide, i would hate to be the one standing in the aftermath of a loss like that - i can't speak from any experience from either side and i can never truly understand how far mental health can go into leading to suicide but i could never contemplate suicide unless i had no one left to love or if i was slowly dying from an incurable disease etc

it is unequivocally selfish. It is transferring the pain the person feels to the people who love them. It is life-altering and devastating to those around that person. People who commit suicide are cowards.

I think expecting someone to continue living just for you when their existence is nothing but pain and misery is unparalleled in selfishness. There’s no need to hurl insults. Many people have lost family members because of suicide, and I don’t think they would appreciate a comment like that.

Really? Because I know people who have lost family members to suicide and they deal with grief and remorse every day of their lives. They would all say that no matter what the person who killed themselves felt, that they were loved and any pain and suffering they were experiencing is temporary. Suicide is a bitch move.

Yea but the selfishness is equally the same from the suicidal person, I don't think family members caring about their loved ones lives is selfish, but I do see someone killing themselves and leaving everyone that care about them to suffer as selfish considering theirs always more than one solution to problems and just using suicide as their exit is a selfish solution to their problems, everyone goes through problems but the truth is that no matter how hard and bad these problems are, killing yourself is never the solution to any problem, the mentality to believe that suicide is acceptable is sick and twisted because it is their own life and there's many children that never got that gift to actually live, some were abortions and others are killed or die young, so for someone to just take their own life because they have problems and leaving everyone else to suffer on top of that is just selfish and completely uneccesary, that should be last resort and having family around you that care about you shouldn't be a position where someone should consider their last resort.

Lol, that take is biased and perpetuated by personal beliefs/feelings. If we’re being objective, logically the choice to commit suicide can be selfish or unselfish depending on the individual circumstances/context as to why it would be considered. Someone can care about another but not/be unable to take action and stop another person from being in constant pain everyday. You’d rather force someone to be alive if they’d rather not, that’s objectively selfish too. Life is not inherently sacred/precious, it can be constant suffering and there are many bad things about living. I’m not saying suicide is right or wrong but that the thought process behind it can be valid for every individual.

Then I'll just agree to disagree on that, family can help find solutions but people try to deal with it themselves that leads to suicide not to mention most problems they bring on themselves with the decisions they make, and even if they don't, suicide is an irreversible decision which is what makes it so horrible, to use suicide as an escape is just wrong, like your parents didn't make sacrifices and went through their own problems to then raise that person so they can just kill themselves, it's just like a giant "fuck you" to everyone around them and themselves as well, challenges are faced head on, solutions aren't found by running away from your problems which is exactly what suicide is, because there's always people that go through the same problems those suicidal people go through but they don't kill themselves.

Yes. But every life is our own. I think a circuitous legal option could be created for those suicidal. I bet 90% wouldn't get through it. Like adding phones on the Golden Gate Bridge.
