People kill themselves for many reasons. The most common reasons are because their life feels like it has more suffering than it has good & that they have a hard time consciously finding meaning in the world.

With that being said, I believe suicide can be seen as both selfish & selfless. Brave & cowardly. These are just social animal labels. Terms that we use to verbally discipline ourselves and pat ourselves on the back.

So, as long as we're human, we're predisposed to being biased towards life. And to a major degree, it's not in our control. It's why we have all of the evolutionary driving forces forcing us to be this way. Forcing us to act in ways we don't fully understand.

So, I believe that the "selfishness" of suicide only trips people up because it has a negative effect on them. (Which could arguably be just as selfish) Whereas, when the same act has a positive effect, then we don't seem to be so up in arms. Unless ofc we wanted them to suffer more. Or if it was a complex thing involving contradictory emotions like simultaneous love & hatred, etc.

But isn't it funny how when personal peace and the avoidance of personal suffering is the goal, it becomes more logical to end ones life? To end ones perception of chaos. Because by removing our life force, it immediately stops the suffering & rids us of this human condition we've been forcefully subjected to. You're not required to suffer & embody meaning when you don't exist.

But many won't see it from that perspective because that would require questioning our implicit assumptions of reality. Which is not a very beneficial thing for us to do. Because if enough people have it, our species could go extinct.

Yes, especially if you have kids. My kids went to school with somebody whose father hung himself. The guy was unemployed and could not find a job. I don't think he had a whole lot going for him. His kids had a tough time.

It’s more complicated than that. It’s both selfish and not. It’s selfish for the people who are left behind but often the person feels like they’re burdening others with their existence and feel like they’re relieving them of that burden.
My significant other’s wife committed suicide. She left behind two very young children. They feel abandoned by her. For them, it was selfish. She’d rather have died than to take care of them.
When I was just 12, a friend of mine committed suicide. I was devastated. It never crossed my mind that she was selfish. I just imagined she was filled with pain and wanted to stop feeling so much.


We never truly know the pain another person carries. My answer isn’t a direct yes or no. It’s both selfish and it is not.

I do think its a weak move because theyre giving up. It should be the last resort or literally no option at all. I would talk to everyone i can and pray to God daily. I’ll be very sad if someone killed themselves but I cannot respect someone who kills themselves

What if it was due to a mental illness (which +90% of suicides can be attributed to). These can literally warp your perspective and make situations that aren't hopeless seem so.

I don't think suicide is 'brave' as some people say. Why is the person CHOOSING to die when their life is precious? Do they even think about the people that they're leaving behind? I think suicide is a weak thing to do. Sure, you've got problems, but don't we all? Yes, some people have it bad, but is taking your own life a solution to all your problems? Not really. If a person is suicidal, I think there'd be signs, at least, depression is one of em, and its the responsibility of the family members to guide the person in the right path, by taking them to a therapist. I do understand that some people are really really hurt and just want to feel numb, and we never know what the other person is going through, but my thoughts? the world breaks everyone, we just shouldn't allow it to kill us.

It's not selfish to have a mental illness but I do think it's selfish to commit suicide. Some of those people have dependents or loved ones that rely on them and it will make their lives harder if they just take their own lives away

I think the majority of suicides are due to mental illness but not all of them.
