He was a high level Roman official so there is a paper trail. Jewish, Christian and Samaritians remember him well. Coptic and eithiopian Christians say he concerted to Christianity and consider him a martyr and a saint. The apostles were generally just regular jewish plebs, fishermen, tax collectors etc
