You do know that research you're referring two was proven fraudulent and it was even taken down from the Lancet in which it was published. Dr. Andrew Wakefield and the other people on the paper cherry-picked their data that showed the relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism. They did it for financial gain and were quickly proven incorrect and fraudulent.

There is no one cause. Autism can be a combination of genetics and environmental factors. It will be interesting to see what RFK says.

It just seems weird that when I was growing up in the 70s autism was not even around and now it seems like every other kid is "on the spectrum".

Autism has always been there in humans. Now we have the knowledge to better identify Autism.

That is only ONE of the factors. Genes from both parents also play a role. Even if no one in your and her family has it, doesn't mean that somewhere in the past, 12 generations ago, someone didn't have it. Genes carry over forever. At one point someone in the family lines had it, and that gene just decided to play peek a boo.
