If no one had pulled you out. That's extremely unsafe and the contractor should have prevented it. If you had been in any deeper, you could have died of asphyxiation.

In mud? It’s not likely unless there was a freak accident involving some of the heavy equipment/machinery.
If you got stuck in concrete it would be more likely.
