Are IRL hospitals actually like the ones in medical dramas?

Like medical shows like greys anatomy and stuff they are so condescending towards each other! Treating newer doctors (ex. interns, Residents) like ants while treating doctors the same level as them (Attendings. etc) as equals, like normal.

Not to the level you see in medical dramas.

There is hierarchy in real hospitals, and newer doctors do get pushed,
challenged, and corrected a lot that’s part of training.

But the extreme condescension and constant drama you see on TV is mostly exaggerated for entertainment.

In real life, most attendings want their residents to grow, not shrink.

There’s pressure, long hours, and tough feedback, but it’s usually more professional than personal.

So yes, hierarchy exists.

The theatrics don’t.

It’s not that they “get more arrogant” the higher they go.

It’s more that responsibility increases, pressure gets heavier, and tolerance for mistakes gets thinner.

Some people do become jerks under that pressure, that’s true in any field but it’s not the default.

Most attendings don’t have the time or interest to treat residents like trash, and most residents don’t gain anything by mistreating interns.

Training can feel intense, even harsh, but it’s usually about standards, not ego.

Real hospitals run on teamwork, not theatrics.

There are teaching hospitals at major universities with medical schools, like Grey's Anatomy, where the behind-the-scenes activity among the faculty and their interns and residents can be very condescending, though in woke times that's harder and harder for them to get away with.

And then public and private hospitals where the whole staff is attending doctors, so they are collegial with each other. Public and private hospitals have residents rotate through, but they are treated with much more respect and professionalism than at teaching hospitals.
