I was in the hospital over a month ago and I can still smell the place.

I have an osteoma (bone tumor) in the ole factory part of my brain. When I looked at the MRI scans I could see it.
It's the size of a pea 🫛 and round like a pea. It's very very close to my eye.
I'm very sensitive to certain smells just like a pregnant woman has.03 Reply

3 moYes. I know someone who had a huge brain tumor. It messed her up really bad. She didn't take care of herself or her home - like not at all, not even basic sanitation. This had been going on for a long time. I don't know how long, but I think it had been years.
They could have filmed a horror movie in her house without need of props. Other than the paramedics who dragged her out of there, I was the first person to enter. As soon as I opened the door all I could hear was a loud buzzing. There were thousands and thousands of flies, gnats and flees everywhere. There were hundreds just within arms reach of my face. It took a lot of will power just to walk in there and do what I needed to do. Even then, I only stayed a few minutes at a time.
She had been living on nothing but Door Dash for months. She didn't even know what she was ordering, or how much. There were opened food containers everywhere with spoiled food. Like hundreds of them. Half empty drinks also. She was ordering tons of food but not eating it. It just went bad and was scattered all over the house. This included produce that just rotten on the carpet.
There were two water leaks in the bathroom. The central part of the house was swamped. That was the worst place for the flies.
Her toilet was clogged and wouldn't flush. She kept using it anyway. Eventually the toilet was filled to the seat with poop and over flowing. The water had evaporated, so it was just poop all the way over the top. Then she started going in wads of toilet paper instead of the toilet. She just threw it on a big pile on the floor. You couldn't even walk in the door to the bathroom because of the big piles of toiler paper (like two feet high). I think she made a pile of toilet paper on the floor, and squatted over it to go.
She had a cat (which eventually escaped). The liter box hadn't been cleaned in ages. There was cat poop everywhere. The floor was completely covered with it in some parts of the house. Like hundreds, maybe thousands of cat poops - and pee. Her clothes were all over the floor and they were covered in poop and pee also.
Mouse poop everywhere. The kitchen counters were completely covered with it. I hate to think what was growing in that kitchen sink.
We discovered all this in mid spring. By summer when it started getting hot, it got worse. We got the water to the house shut off to stop the leaks, and set out a dehumidifier. After a few weeks it was mostly dry in there.
I also set off bug bombs. I intended on killing enough bugs so I could at least stand to go in there for more than few minutes at a time. But the bug bombs worked better than I expected. It probably killed 90% of the flying things within the first week. They started to come back as it got hotter, so I set off more which almost completely got rid of them.
I tried to salvage some things from the house. ANYTHING that was in that house got hit hard with disinfectants. I grabbed her computer and disinfected the hell out of it, but the smell was still there, even on hard plastic after being out of her house for months.
I tried to salvage some of her clothes. I soaked them outside in water first. Then ran them through the washing machine. I washed them six times with a double rinse each time, and the water was still not clean.
I was talking to the neurosurgeon about this stuff. She said that kind of tumor really can cause this type of thing. It depends on the part of the brain that's affected. One thing it can do is cause the person to lose any sense of cause and effect. So for example she might not connect all the flies to the food and open drinks laying everywhere.
I don't even know what the smell was. I didn't recognize it. I think it was a bit of everything. When I first started going there, I was fully covered from head to foot and wearing a mask and gloves. Even if I was only in there five minutes, I completely stripped when I got home and immediately threw everything in the wash. My shoes were covered when I went inside her house, but I still disinfected them when I got home. All I did was walk in the door to my house before stripping down, but that was long enough for that room to smell for weeks (it's closed off from the rest of the house).00 Reply
3 moYes actually... one of my cars got a plastic bag melted to it's underside somwhere on the highway probably (the woman drives it). It would stink after a drive. I don't know if I became paranoid or what... but I would smell that smell all over the place. I'd smell my shirt... nope. Rub my nuts and smell my fingers... nope. Smell some tiddies... nope. I'd just smell it though.
It was insane because nobody would smell it but me... for reals I'd go downstairs to check if the car was on fire or something at times.

My car has been fixed for over a week now and I still smell it. I think it's just our brains connecting the smell to just the right kind and ammount of fear and it gets imprinted. Maybe it can happen with other emotions, but I think fear is a big one that makes us hyper-alert.
3 moNot like that. A prolonged sense memory like that is sometimes sign of a neurological disorder. I recommend calling your doctor and setting up a brain scan.

They definitely wonβt figure it out if you donβt tell them about it. If they do all the brain scans and canβt find anything, try acupuncture. I had occipital neuralgia. My GP and the ER let me down. I was desperate. So i tried acupuncture. The Traditional Chinese Medicine doctor significantly decreased my pain and increased my range of movement after one session. After one session a week for a month, my symptoms had completely subsided. Iβm a firm believer now.
3 moYeah... I thought I would eventually go nose-blind to that smell after working in a hospital for 6 years...
I still smell it when I go home. I haven't really figured it out, but C. diff definitely makes it worse lol.

3 moA bar. Every time I'm at a bar, it's like the smell soaks into my skin. I don't know what it is but they seem to have a very unusual smell.

3 moHospitals definitely have a unique smell. For me, it's a hardware store. I LOVE the smell and it seems every time I go into the garage at home, I get a smell that's similar. I think it's a cross between fertilizer and maybe rubber? 😂

It's probably a combination of cleaning products your wife used. Notice I said WIFE uses. Hospitals smell like a combination of rubbing alcohol, bleach, latex and hand sanitizer.
3 moOh, hospitals smell so horrible.
And my Jeep always smells like a barn since it gets treated like a farm truck and has hauled everything from hay to fertilizer to chickens and even the occasional goat.

2 moItβs their lotion. They always send home whatβs left of the cream/lotion. I like the scent, but it really does smell like a hospital.

3 moI love the smell of gasoline, I wish it would never go away lol
10 Reply308 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. Yes, but it's been years since it's happened. I would somehow smell the smell of either cigarette smoke, or laundry detergent, when there was neither smell actually present
