Woman spanks her child often, please help

I just want some solutions regarding this. One of my neighbors is a single mother, most likely in her late twenties or early thirties. I used to hear her 5 year old son cry quite often. Once, when I just went to see what was going on, I was shocked to see her mercilessly spanking the kid. When I questioned her about it, she behaved very arrogantly. and insisted that she is free to do as she pleases because he's her son. When I told her that she was being cruel, she replied something like "at this age itself he argues with me and doesn't obey me. I'm disciplining him in this way, so that he doesn't grow up to be an a**hole like his dad, who abandoned me when I became pregnant". When I warned her that I would report her actions, she very casually replied "Go ahead, I myself will give you the phone number of the nearest police station. Do what you wish. I have certain 'contacts' at the highest level, so no individual or law can do anything to me". AT that point, I believed that she was lying, so I asked her why she didn't make use of these 'contacts' to deal with the man who abandoned her. To that she replied 'Its none of your business'.

I don't know what's going on, but I really feel sorry for that poor kid. I want to save him from his mother's clutches. Please suggest me what I can do.

P.S. I don't stay in the US or any other developed country. Although there are strict laws here, there is also quite a bit of corruption. So her having high level contacts (who could help her escape the law) is very much a possibility.

I don't see the problem with spanking children. I was raised with being spanked as discipline. I survived. Plus the kid's 5. 5 year olds cry. If she spanks him because he disobeys then that's her business. I used to get whacked five times on the butt with a wooden spoon by my mother and they weren't no love taps either.

If you don't want to spank your kids then don't.

You don't get the point. She does that several times a day. And it clearly seems like a case where she does that just to take 'revenge' on the man who abandoned her (although it never works that way).

This question is probably super old but I would suggest calling children's aid. All you would have to do is tell them anonymously say what you saw and they will do the investigating

To many people my age (+/- 5 years) weren't spanked enough as kids.
