If you got the fulfilment out of the game you played, it's not a waste of time. It's another activity to do in your spare time so you don't drive yourself insane from the everyday pressure of responsibility, expectations, ...

Definitely not. While not as always "enriching", it's a nice down time and a good social space when done right.

People literally make a living off streaming.
Plus video games not only improve hand-eye coordination, but they can even be a source of actual character development.
You die irl, you die.
But if you're playing, say, a survival game, you die and learn lessons often. Well, you don't always learn lessons - but often, to enjoy the game, you will.
There's new studies about how video games affect us often, now. Some interesting ones have found that gamers often tackle big problems irl with a sort of positive urgency similar to how they may in a game. Effectively, some gamers will "gamify" their motivation irl. Sometimes unconscously.
Plus, having fun and enjoying yourself is a productive use of time. You can't "hustle" 24/7. Rest is necessary. Gaming can be a great rest while allowing you to have fun or even explore whole new worlds and stories.
Not to mention games with deep messaging and narrative themes.Gamer here-
Of course they are a waste of time: that's why we play them: to take a break from our responsibilities and unwind.
I can spend HOURS on a game and not think about the time or anything else! Buy I still work, do chores around the house, and balance my other responsibilities in life. Gaming is just a nice way to detach myself from the nonsense and stressors of reality for x amount of time.
As long as you're taking care if your real life, and not letting a game engross your hygiene, job, school, family, or friends... I really don't see the issues.
It's a game: a hobby. Just like people that watch sports for hours on end? Yeah... I don't see anyone criticizing that.
And anyone that says video games are bad? There are way worse, and more expensive vices out there.Nope. Everyone needs down time to distress and relax. Different people choose different things for that stress relieving outlet. If you just go go go all the time, you end up very stressed and you health goes on you as a result. Then you spend large portions of your life and earnings fighting declining health/disease and mental illness. You likely die younger in the long run. Part of being healthy is goofing off and having fun for a few hours every day. So if you want to spend that time playing video games, then get to it. If you want to do something else, go do something else. You should have a variety of interests. The more things you are involved in casually, the more interesting life is, and the longer you will live. A big part of living a long life is to just keep going and keep doing things you enjoy.
I mean it depends on if you have a healthy balance with it or not like anything. You can build a social network with other people who have similar interests or play alone. It is a great escape from reality. I wouldn’t consider it a waste of time if you’re doing something you enjoy. I personally think it shouldn’t completely consume your life, if all you do is play games go outside every once in awhile or try other hobbies and then go back and play more games. This holds true with other hobbies as well lol
Not anymore of a waste of time than any other purely recreational hobby. It can be overdone, of course, but there's nothing wrong with playing video games occasionally either to relax or hang out with people. Not everything you do has to be about finding how to 100% maximize your efficiency and usefulness. That's an inhumane modern way of thinking that is a product of the evils of capitalism and communism - turning people into nothing more than cogs who are only valuable for what they can produce.
I play Dead by Daylight.
Yes, it is a waste of time. It can be fun but ultimately it is to pass the time while waiting for my investments to turn green and put another market order AKA reinvest my money.
I much rather be acting dead on a sandy beach for hours, go for a swim, eat BBQ and drink Pina Colada in Thailand. And ride a Jet Ski.
Or cuddle and massage girls.
Or explore the Condominiums of Pattaya and purchase me a new home.
Drive Quad, Motorcycle, Ferrari.
I don't have money to do anything like that. Yet.
I like video-games as much as anyone, but I would say it generally is a waste of time. Not so much for children, perhaps. But for teenagers-adults, I think it is.
That said, compared to passive forms of entertainment (ex: film) or destructive forms of entertainment (ex: drinking/drugs), I think it is the best alternative.
Ideally, a person would entertain themselves with a nice activity, such as a walk. Realistically, when assessing people's actual entertainment choices, gaming is the most developing: teamwork, communication, reaction-time, quick-thinking, etc.
Compare this to scrolling Instagram. You can earn money playing games. You can leverage yourself as a gamer. Recreational use is also not a waste of time if it is needed for a balanced life.
However, if someone is playing games and wishes to do something better with their life that would be a waste. I'm sure plenty of people have goals to be better versions of themselves but waste their time on entertainment and partying too much.
The truth is most become enslaved by entertainment, from what I see, because they lack the knowledge of how to make use of their greatest motives.
At the end of the day, as long as you had a fun life that is what counts but entertainment is more shallow than most will ever know. They truly are missing out and don't even know it.Nothing you enjoy is a waste of time. Besides entertainment value, video games can reduce stress levels, serve as an opportunity to socialize through online interactions, and are proven to have positive effects on the brain. Like all things, they can be used to excess, which isn't healthy or helpful, but for a normal person, I'd say video games are not a waste of time at all.
Speaking as someone who played video games since I was 4 years old, I can say that it’s not a waste of time (unless it’s an addiction).
People make some SERIOUS money playing video games and can make a lot of friends too. Playing video games also sparked my interest in working with electronics and then earning my college degree in Electrical Engineering.
It’s definitely not a waste of time though it’s stereotypical to believe it is.Playing video games is like watching TV, it's just for some fun and enjoyment. As long as you don't become addicted to it or neglect things of importance, you're fine. I once in a while will go on a "playing video games" binge myself.
I would say it is not a waste of time if:
- you are a professional gamer/streamer, etc. and its your source of income
- if you do it for entertainment purposes/fight depression/socialize (play with friends) with a limited time
I would say its a waste of time if:
- you spend most if not all of your free time on video games and have nothing useful as a result of such activity
No.
Enjoying yourself is never a waste of time. People who think otherwise have missed the entire point of existing. So If you enjoy gaming, it's not a waste of time.
There is no point to citing percentages or doing a poll about it. Preferences are not validated by votes. No I don't think video games are a waste of time. Video games are 1 out of many things people enjoy and have fun in life with.
There are people who play video games practically like 24/7. Others do play video games but not all of the time. Even gamers have responsibility and a balance in life.
No. If you are having a leisure time and you're enjoying video games then you're not wasting it as long as all the responsibilities are done first or you leave time to do your other responsibilities. People who don't know time management have the tendency to waste time no matter what they do.
Depends. Does it make you happy and fufilled in life? Then yes.
If not no.
I dont play video games or any games except Chess and card games but I think it's important to keep a balance
If you enjoy something and it is used in moderation, it is not a waste of time. Of course like drugs, alcohol and gaming including, doing it wayyy too much is harmful. But to the average gamer? No.
Anything can be a "waste of time" if there is enough apathy and idleness intrinsic in it.
But gaming is a lucrative industry and business. Only dimwits who don't understand technology think otherwise.
no- for some of us its a great break from reality and escape from such seriousness
Yeah... but so is life when you think about it. Like a little league coach once told me "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game... and even that doesn't matter that much".😆
If gaming is what you enjoy. As long as you handle your business. Do that s***.
