How would you feel about an author releasing a prequel to a series you love in the middle of said series?

For example lets say you are reading and really loving a book series by an author and awaiting the next book in this series. only instead of the next book continuing the story, its actually a prequel detailing events that happened prior to the main plot of the series. Maybe it fleshes out certain important characters or historical events in the series.

How would you feel about that?

Annoyed because i would be expecting to read what happens next not what already happened before the plot

I would be ok with it. it might help clear up the mystery behind things prior to the plot of the main series

I actually love that, fleshes out more details of this world that i have been enjoying reading about

I read the edge of darkness series. Afterwards the author released Psychotic Obsession. Psychotic Obsession is about the male main character in the edge of darkness - his parents story. 20 years before.

I dont mind when they do this. Gives you more of a background and yiu can see why the characters are the way they are. Its the same with flashbacks

Depends, its bassically a flashback worth its own book. It can work well but it can't be too big before a finished work.

But if its just its own thing in the same world before the main story than please no. Let me finish my story first.

Robert Jordan wrote New Spring after book 10 before book 11. It was a fully fleshed novel (just shorter than his novels). On my rereads, I always start with that, because it helps the series seem more complete.

I'd be incandescent with rage, particularly if it looked like the author had quit writing the main series.

Prequels. Two issues- 1. desire to read /see things "in order"- prequel, current, sequel. 2. Quality- "Originals" are -most often- better than any prequel and sequel. Star Wars was one that that was reasonably decent in the movie genre. TV series are even worse. MacGyver-TOS- far outdid the remake/sequel., ditto Walker Texas Ranger./ Walker. Hawaii Five-O sequel is passable with a reasonable story arc.

And how about The Lone Ranger's "unannounced sequel" of Green Hornet with Britt Reid being the great-nephew of The Lone Ranger?
