Many in the USA have the day off work in recognition of MLK Jr., his leadership in the 1960's civil rights movement. So might as well learn some history...
Born in 1929... by the time 1945 rolled around, he was only 16, so he missed any call to service in WWII. Good timing.
His naming is like that of Martin Luthor, a German priest and founder of the Protestant Reformation.
His father MLK Sr was a registered republican up til his time of support for President Kennedy.
It wasn't until 1983 that President Ronald Reagan signed into law making this day a national holiday. Some states called it "Civil Rights Day" for some time.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964
Famous "I have a dream speech in 1963"..
"I've been on the mountain top..." speech a day before assassinated.
He was killed in 1968 by gun shot. James Earl Ray was caught and admitted to the crime, but later recanted and said he was framed.
His brother died of what was determined... accidental drowning... in 1969.
His mother, Alberta, was murdered at church while performing the lords prayer, by a black man from Dayton Ohio whom said "all Christians are my enemy".
