I decided today that regardless of how desirable a guy is, I won’t date him if I have to give up my freedom or dreams, even if I’m too old to have kids, if I wait for a different guy, I would have to marry a guy who gives me the freedom to be myself and let’s me chase my own dreams and social pursuits.

The idea of marriage seems cool but I know it won’t be rainbows and flowers. What I want is pretty simple: respect, loyalty, communication, boundaries, and emotional support. Basically the bare minimum.


I don’t have to be married to have that. Plus, marriage isn’t even permanent, it doesn’t guarantee anything. It won’t guarantee my nonexistent husband will respect me and that’s a huge one, one I will never go without

I agree. Except that marriage requires sacrifice in compromise. I think what's most important is what you said last. Don't be so rigid about compromising with. Be rigid about the person you choose. So you won't have to compromise and sacrifice as much. Too many people just don't want to be alone rather than waiting for the right person. And that's usually their undoing.

I know religious textbooks and societal traditions disagree, but marriage is worth as much as the piece of paper it's signed on in observance of some random person given imaginary powers to oversee this whole charade.

Life is real. The people we meet and know and relationships we build along the way. That stuff is real. Marriage is literally an imaginary thing people/society use to try to manipulate the reality around us.

I would say you're freedom is number one, your family is also a number one. I encourage my companion to do what she needs to do to improve upon herself. And to have great friends. They go out often away from their companions.

With a very short term view, it is obviously the "freedom" of bachelor life; and I do not mean screwing around as I was never, and I am not into that.

However, when you look further and think about life in 50s and beyond; remaining single by choice is a destructive decision that is going to leave you cut away from "normal" social life and leave you lonley and helpless as fuck in times of need.

I think what you're saying is I'm 37, I'm starting to give up hope and even though I would really like a family, I feel it's a bad idea to compromise on a life partner that I feel wouldn't allow me to grow as a person nor fulfill my needs. And that I could not commit to 100%.
As bitter pill as it is, you may have save yourself from a draining divorce a few years down the line. And demonstrated a startling level of self awareness.

What I mean is, I do not want a guy who forces me to sacrifice my dreams for his, instead, I want a guy who shares the same dreams that I do, so we can chase the same godly purposes together, like many doctors marry nurses and I want to own a company and marry a company manager or religious person so we can be religious together.
