It really takes people who can endure the hard and bad times. So many people and their support network will encourage their loved ones to just divorce and start over.

I don't need the ring, but I do need the commitment. The ring does come with legal and tax benefits, however, that should not be overlooked. When I am in the hospital I want my girlfriend/ wife by my side and legally capable of making decisions for me without fuss from doctors. When I die I want her to have my ranch and home without fuss from my family. When I die I want HER to see to it that my final wishes are honored rather than people who might have their own ideas of what is "acceptable" or "proper".

Sure, there are legal instruments for all of these things, but they are all contestable, and do get contested... and are unnecessary if you get married.

I’m curious though… you want the commitment but are you prepared to commit? Commitment to me is the real deal. It’s until death do us part. There’s no reason divorce should exist instead until their locked up for abuse your stuck with your commitment.

If that’s not your idea of commitment then how do you recon we deal with that 30 year mortgage that has 20 years left. What about our 3 kids of various ages? Do I or you just have to give up on them? Are we forced to separate them from us?

What about the fact when divorce happens it overwhelmingly is men that have to pay alimony or child support? This isn’t a problem you have to worry about but it is when your a man on his grind.

Marriage is like a hurricane there is a lot of blowing in beginning & when it’s all said & done your house is gone. As for me I would be happier in a lifelong relationship without marriage. I’ll pass on the 3 rings. An engagement ring, wedding ring & suffering.

My great grandparents on my mother's side were never formally married, they just always said they were. They got married at 21 and 19 and were together for 68 years. He died at 89 and she at 88 just a year later.

I don't feel a piece of paper and a ring determine how committed you are to your partner.

I think marriage is really there for the kids. Because, without the legalities binding me and my wife together, we would have walked away from each other several times. But every time we think of divorce, we be like "hell that sucks, screw that" and we figure it out.

So is marriage, except you have the complications of paying for attorneys and potentially losing half of your assets and paying your former spouse, sometimes for life, after a divorce. Yes, prenup, but if you saw how often prenups get set aside in whole or in part by judges you'd realize that a prenup can just be an avenue to make the attorneys even more money.

I work in the courts. Technically a legal contract, but breaking it is treated as a "breach of contract." No-fault means the cheater still gets half.

In the states of Wisconsin, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Nebraska, Montana, Missouri, Minnesota, Michigan, Kentucky, Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, Hawaii, Florida, Colorado, and California, it is the only option. In those, either party can initiate it at any time. My problem with the idea is that a cheater can file against the innocent party and still the cheater is entitled to half of all marital assets and if the innocent spouse earns more, the cheater will likely get alimony / spousal support.
