It doesn't. The purpose of an engagement ring was to serve as an insurance policy; if the guy flaked and bolted on you, you'd be able to sell the ring and live off the money for a while. Needless to say, that's no longer relevant, and the idea's only hung on to as a token of "women's oppression" and a way of propping up De Beers and their foul ilk.
Since it's more about looking good, there's no real reason beyond tradition to stick with diamonds. Or insist on natural ones that finance African civil wars when synthetics exist. Hell, if the idea is to be a symbol of his (or possibly her; do lesbians proposing buy engagement rings?) love and devotion, have him go out and FIND a suitable rock, then take a metalsmithing class and make the ring himself. THAT is much more of a conversation piece, I should think.
I have direct experience with moissanite, but the only thing a diamond alone would work for is cutting glass, and how often are you in a situation that 1. requires that, AND 2. couldn't be solved just by smashing it?
If the person truly loves me then I'm fine with even a fake engagement ring. She doesn't have to show her love through expensive ring.
i have no idea what either of those mean... i just want a ring.
