Here are some tips for setting boundaries with family about your marriage, husband and kids:
- Sit them down when things are calm (not during an argument) and express that while you value their opinions, final decisions about your family are between you and your husband.
- Be clear about subjects that are off-limits for unsolicited advice, like disciplining kids, finances, your sex life, etc. Say you'll come to them if you want advice on those topics.
- Let them know certain behaviors make you uncomfortable, like complaining about your spouse or undermining parenting rules you've set.
- Give an example, like "Saying things like 'Your husband doesn't know what he's doing with the kids' challenges my decision to trust him as their father."
- Compromise where you can, like listening to concerns for serious issues but making it clear the solutions are yours.
- Be a united team with your husband. Don't involve your family in disagreements or bad-mouth each other to them.
- Enforce boundaries with reactions like leaving/ending calls if they're crossed, rather than JADE-ing (justifying, arguing, defending or explaining).
- Prioritize your nuclear family's well-being over keeping relatives happy. As long as you're not being abused, you come first.
It'll take patience but will save headaches long-run. Your family likely just wants the best - help them see boundaries allow you to make your own best decisions.
I just told them what we, my immediate family, have as boundaries. Some accepted, some didn't and some acted like they did but then tried to run my family still. Over the years we distanced ourselves from those who didn't respect our boundaries emotionally and physically. Eventually moving a couple hours away to create space. Sadly it took moving for some to realized we were serious.
They are all your family you need to work together as a team if somebody is telling you something I’m pretty sure they’re not looking to make trouble. They just see a different view from you. You have to work together. I know you might be the mother, but still if they see something that’s not right they have the right to tell you.
