How soon is too soon to ask someone to marry you?

I am in a lovey dovey mood and I am just asking this out of curiosity. My great grandparents married after two months of dating (and were married for 55 years), my grandparents married after two weeks of dating (and were married for 47 years), and my parents married after one year of dating (and have been married for 38 years in June). I wanted to know how long you waited to ask your significant other to marry you and how long you have been married for. Also, how long did it take you to realize they were “the one”. Thanks in advance for all of your answers and comments.

I've been married twice.

My first wife and I worked in the same office for about 18 months before we started dating, and I proposed about 4 months later. That marriage lasted 20+ years, with 3 kids, before an amicable divorce.

I met my current wife on a dating site. We dated for about 4 months before I proposed. We just celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary.

I guess the answer to the question is... "Not before it feels like the right thing to do." It's probably also a good idea to propose only if you're pretty sure your partner will say "Yes".

You should date someone long enough to have experienced a few conflicts with them. That is when people stop putting on a false front and they show you who they really are. Will they throw things and call you names, or will they calmly discuss the conflict and search for a solution or resolution?

It is relative to be honest. For some people, it could take less than a month or two to know that that person is the one and for others it might take months to a year or two to determine if that person is the one.

I don’t believe there’s such a thing as too soon to propose marriage. There is definitely such a thing as too soon to get married. By extrapolation, it’s arguable that there’s such a thing as too soon to agree to marriage.
But the asking itself literally accomplishes very little of consequence.

I think that the fact that previous generations married so quickly and at such a young age get managed to stay together for so long is more a matter of a change in relation expectations than anything else.

Recent generations see things as disposable and temporary. From TV dinner containers to relationships, they grew up thinking that if something doesn't suit your needs just throw it out and move on to the next one. Everything is disposable and replaceable in their view.

The sense of responsibility to both your spouse, your family and your children has vanished. These are the me generations, more concerned about self gratification then contribution and responsibility. It's all about me. They are the entitled generations who thinks that the world owes them a living and revolves around them.

They've lived a pampered life thanks to the previous generations who sacrificed so much for them and they take it for granted. They don't know what hardship is and have become lazy and entitled.

At the first sign of difficulty they're ready to run away because they think they are entitled to a life free of stress. Unfortunately they learn that there's no such thing, but they learn it too late.

Everything feels so good and so right when you are in a honeymoon phase. I'd wait until that's over because we tend to overlook things that might affect our relationship in future when we are infatuated. So, once that feeling settles down and you start noticing flaws in your partner and they notice flaws in you and still you guys learn to work things out without any big fights and your partner and you start talking about future plans, you could tell that your partner really wants to be with you all his/her life... then you know you're ready and so is he/she. But if you're asking me to tell you the exact time period, I'd say at least wait a year before you take the next step.

I was with my now wife for 7 years before I popped the question then she sneakily made a marriage ceremony happen without informing me about a year later.

No I didn't know that we'd be married, all my work colleagues knew and some came along the rest met us at the reception/bar later along with her friends.

It has nothing to do with time. If both parties are mature and communicate i don't think 6 months is crazy.

Under a year Is too soon. But the way to go is - First date, then move in together, see if you survive between 4 walls and then 6 months later you can propose.

In the moment, ‘They’ are always the ‘One’. My last girlfriend after seeing the sun set and rise again asked me if it would be weird if she felt inclined to propose to me. First night we met … I guess timeline is what you both make it to be.
