She might be not feeling emotionally prepared for marriage or she may have some doubts about future. There may be some unresolved problems or a mismatch in fundamental goals between them. Hardly any girl may never want to marry, disagree with marriage as an institution, building a family is always a hidden desire in all humans. This issue requires immense respect and understanding from the man to navigate hurt feelings and differing life goals. Immediate reactions and feelings of man may be of rejection and he may get hurt, ashamed, or angry, while the woman might feel embarrassed or overwhelmed. It is necessary that both the partners try to find out "why," especially if they thought the relationship was strong. The couple may decide to stay together with a different kind of commitment or limits of relationship and agree to rethink about marriage later, but this requires significant effort. Breakup is the last option. Communication and discussions is the only easy problem solving tool.

It really depends…. Sometimes the answer genuinely is “not right now” if you been dating for 10 years and someone won’t marry you… You’re probably getting your life wasted by someone who doesn’t want to marry you.

But keep in mind that marriage is a huge decision and a lot of people rush it too soon…. Like within a year or less of being together. Look, it’s smart if you’re not sure yet to say no. Especially if there hasn’t been talks of the future yet or maybe there has been. It’s not just for themselves but you too… Last thing either person needs is to marry the wrong person.

Some relationships… Yeah, they’re a dead end road. Someone’s wasting someone’s time there hasn't been talks of the future and they been together for years. That’s bad. That probably means you’re just a hold over if all else fails they will marry you and that’s just not love.

I would say generally it's over. Definitely not all cases. There are a lot of men with no self respect that would chase a girl and keep trying with her regardless of how many times she rejects them. But generally, if a girl says no, it means she doesn't see or isn't sure of a future with you. If you keep on insisting and try many times, and eventually she says yes, it just means she thinks nothing better will come along and finally gave in.

I would personally never get with someone that had to think about being with me or rejected me. For me being with someone you love and makes you happy should be a no brainer.

Depends WHY she says no. Perhaps the timing is off (like I turned down a few proposals when I was young bc I had to finish school... and so did the guy). But our generation was born of folks who tended to be HS/college sweethearts and married right out of school... then split. I didn't want that in my life. (Coincidentally the guy I married was apparently v infatuated with me back in college, though he was dating lot of v racy gals at that time while I was "mayor of the campus" and v obviously a "good girl" not to be messed with.)

Not necessarily. I've known couples where she turned him down a few times before finally saying yes... and then they had a long happy marriage.

Sometimes it's not the right time, or she's not ready to get married... yet.

If she’s against marriage as a concept but wants the relationship then it can be salvaged

If she’s already planning her exit then it’s best to rip the band aid off and end it

Women are complicated when it comes to these things

That’s why it’s best not to propose out of the blue

It means you fundamentally do not understand her experience of your relationship. This could be for a number of reasons. For example your relationship is shallow... any normal relationship has conversations about what each partner is prioritising right now, where they see themselves in five years, their life goals, etc. Or it could be you arre having those conversations and just aren't listening to her.

The answer should never be 'no'. If you get a 'no' then you asked the wrong question.

Options are to invest in your growth and capacity for meaning in relationships or walk away, toss a coin and hope the next person you meet is different.

I would think it depends. If it a one month relationship, a NO is probably you've asked way to soon.

If it is a 5 year relationship, a NO would be a 'not with you' answer and probably would be termination.

I wouldn't be surprised that some proposal are made when a relationship is fading and the girl is thinking of moving on. I received a proactive NO from a girlfriend. i. e. I hadn't proposed and she decided to get in first.
