Is This Secure Packing or Packing Overkill?

Question

I recently ordered something online. It wasn't big, measuring about 9Lx4.5Wx2H inches (23Lx12Wx5H cm).

What I received is shown in the picture. Box 1 was the outside, box 2 was inside box 1, and box 3 was inside box 2, all very securely packed. What I had ordered, my purchase, was actually inside box 3, safely wrapped in bubble wrap.

For clarity, box 1 is 13Lx11Hx6H inches (34Lx29Wx15H cm).

I liked that my purchase was securely packed, it certainly wasn't damaged in shipping. But were all these boxes and paper packing material really necessary?

Solid. I probably would not have gone that far, but i can understand. There are at least a couple of issues in play here. If you have ever worked at the post office or a shipper and seen how handlers treat packages, you might go above and beyond. Also, there have been reports of thefts that originated inside shipping facilities. An indiscriminate thief might have snatched your coins. But fewer people will open the first box and justify risking their jobs for…. a smaller box. 😂😂😂 Fewer still are going to risk taking the time to cut into multiple boxes to discover what is inside.
Or, possibly, the sender has some inexplicable disdain for trees and loves overusing paper and cardboard. 🤣🤣🤣

bit of overkill perhaps. I'd have probably been comfortable with two boxes, the paper, and the inner box bubble wrapped. My meds are sometimes packed that way. I recently recieved a neon pegasus. It is 30" x 36" and quite fragile I would guess. It came sandwiched between sheets of white foam with a sheet of corrugated laying over the front of the fixture, packed into what amounts to a tray of corrugated. One caveat as this sounds a bit skimpy. All pieces of corrugated are a full 1/2" thick as shown...

I'd rather have too much than not enough which has happened to me about 10 times and there's no packing whatsoever and the items are broken!

I ordered a casserole dishe, no packing whatsoever.
I called and they sent me another one. No packing and it was broken.
The 3rd one they had it delivered to me personally by an employee from the store and it was NOT broken.

But I was stuck getting rid of the mess from the broken one's and two big boxes.

Consider yourself blessed, around these parts they store parcels in fields before delivery and I'm not joking

Then they just leave it on any random door within and you have to ask nicely on social media who's got it

So no its not excess because big parcels are easier to find.

For a coin maybe. These packages get thrown all over and I've had friends who worked at small companies who told me stories about how difficult packaging for shipping gets because some people will complain about even the box something comes in maybe getting a little scuffed or a corner being rounded off from the ups driver chucking it on the porch.

Depends what it is but over packaging is a major issue, they talk about carbon emissions but never mention the effects over packaging has.

You ever in the store and you buy a big box of chicken legs or breasts or whatever and you take it home and the box is only half full. Thats a sales tactic. Or I bought burgers and when I got the box home instead of 6 burgers there was 3.

So I ordered 6 boxes of honey from the store and they gave me a box that was 1.3 times the size of my product so they could use decorative packaging and wrapping paper inside the box for each set of honey I bought. It is a strategic method used to boost customer satisfaction so you will leave them a higher rating online and be more satisfied with your product creation.

It depends on what was in the package but keep in mind that people that work for shippers routinely throw packages 20 ft off loading docks into the backs of trucks. So I would rather have somebody over pack something then under pack it have it arrive to me broken.

Yes, that's "packing overkill" indeed.  Additionally, more trees had to be cut down for the paper and cardboard used for such waste of excessive packaging.

Seems like overkill. Depends on the fragility of the item being shipped. Maybe the shipper has been plagued with complaints and returns.

That's overkill for coins lol. This is a process better "coined" for older monitors and computers, which I've seen many times that arrived wrapped in paper towels with crumpled up printer paper as bubble wrap.

The packaging is used to throw off package pirates, also so as not to give any idea what is in it. I have had valuables shipped as machine parts in big boxes
