What do you think of "personalized pricing"?

Honestly, I think this is a dangerous idea if it means companies can secretly charge people more simply because AI determines they can afford it. 😳


Imagine two people walking into the same store to buy the same product, but one pays $10 while the other pays $15 because the system assumes they have more money. Same product, same store, but different prices based on their financial situation. How is that fair?


I understand that businesses want to maximize profits, and personalized discounts can sometimes benefit consumers. But there's a huge difference between offering someone a discount and secretly charging another person more because their income, appearance, shopping habits, or personal data suggest they can afford it.


What concerns me most is the lack of transparency. If companies can use facial recognition and AI to estimate someone's wealth, how accurate will those assessments be? What happens when the system makes assumptions based on someone's appearance? And how would customers even know they're being charged more than everyone else?


Someone who looks wealthy might be drowning in debt, while someone who looks ordinary might be financially comfortable. Your appearance is not your bank statement. 😂


I also worry about privacy. People shouldn't have to wonder whether every trip to the supermarket is an opportunity for a company to collect their biometric data and use it against their financial interests.


I'm not against businesses making profits. I'm against using personal information to exploit customers who have less bargaining power or to quietly charge people more simply because a company believes they can afford it.


If businesses want to offer personalized discounts, fine. But prices should be transparent, customers should have meaningful privacy protections, and there should be safeguards against discriminatory pricing.


Because once companies can determine how much they think you're willing or able to pay, the question becomes: will they reward you with a better deal, or punish you for having the ability to pay more?


And honestly, I don't trust every corporation to choose the more ethical option when there's extra profit involved. 🤷‍♀️

As for Personalized Pricing I think it’s wonderful & I think it’s so wonderful it will lead to lower prices when the store going out of business.

On the other hand before the store goes out of business I’ll teach people how to scam the system & make a profit.

A homeless looking person goes in the store to buy something & a rich person returns the same item without the original receipt & gets a store credit for more.

You keep doing that & you’ll get some free stuff down the road with all the store credits.

@exitseven Walmart already does dynamic pricing on many items, changing prices during the day based on demand for each particular item. That's just one reason why I rarely shop at Walmart.

I rarely shop there because when President Trump implemented tariffs on Chinese stuff they were going to add the tariff into the cost of the item and tell the public how much the price had gone up.

You know this is already happening. The only new part is the introduction of AI.
You have paid more for the exact same product in the exact same store as other people who were there on the exact same day. You have also paid less. It’s been going on for eons. If you only have a problem with it now, then you don’t really have a problem with it. It is, after all, capitalism.
