Ocelots

My favorite wild cats

- Ocelots live in a wide variety of habitats from tropical rainforests, to savanna grasslands, to mangrove marshes/forests, to thorn scrub regions.

- They mainly seek out habitats with dense foliage to nest in and climb.

-Lifespan is about 10-13yrs in the wild and 20yrs in captivity.

-They measure 27-39in. in length + 10-18in. in tail length.

-Ocelots are nocturnal and travel from 1.8- 6.7km. every night. Males may travel 2x as far.

-They prey on rodents, young deer, frogs, fish, sloths, monkeys, birds, and iguanas.

-They're preyed on by harpy eagles, jaguars, and anacondas.

-They are extremely solitary and territorial. They only meet up during mating season.

-They only have 1-4 cubs at a time and the young will stay w/ the mother until they're 1 or 2yrs old.

Black spotted Leopards

My Favorite Wild Cats

-There are 30 different subspecies of leopard found across Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

-Panthers are solitary and nocturnal hunters. They are Agile, stealthy, and hard to spot when on the prowl.

-They are extremely aggressive and territorial, especially when 1 male crosses another's territory.

-Panthers have about 2-4 cubs per litter and they stay together until the cubs are about 2yrs old.

-Panthers prey on deer, wild boar, antelopes, warthogs, and tapir (typically large herbivores). When larger prey are scarce, they turn to rabbits and birds.

-Panthers are typically the most dominant predators in their habitats, although they'll occasionally fall prey to lions or hyenas (depending on where they are in the world)

-Humans pose their greatest threat, through trophy hunting and deforestation.

-Although leopards can't swim, jaguars are known to love swimming and playing in water.

-The "black panther" is a melanistic (darker) color variety of basically any large cat species. It's used in reference to melanistic leopards, jaguars, cougars, bobcats, and even tigers on occasion. In this take, I'm referring to Jaguars and leopards, though.

Asian Golden Cat

My Favorite Wild Cats
-This species stands about 20in. tall

-Weigh up to 34lbs.

-Measures in at about 26-41in. + 16-22in. tail length.

-They've lived up to 12 years in captivity

-They're extremely solitary and mostly unseen/unobserved in nature.

-They have 1-3 kittens per litter

-In some Thailand regions, the cat is called "fire tiger". According to legend, burning the cat's fur will drive away tigers. Eating the Asiatic Golden Cats flesh or carrying it's fur is believed to have the same effect.

Tiger

My Favorite Wild Cats

-Tigers are the largest feline species in the world. And the 3rd largest carnivore (on land) after polar & brown bears.

-An adult tiger may consume up to 88lbs. of meat in 1 meal and will often guard the rest of it's kill or bury it until it's ready to feed again.

-Lions are largely solitary. They don't live in prides or groups.

-Tiger's hind legs are longer than their front legs. This gives them the ability to jump 20-30 feet forward in 1 leap.

-An adult Siberian Tiger (largest subspecies) can weigh up to 660lbs.

-White spots on the back of their ears are believed to either help cubs follow their mothers through tall grass or give the impression of eyes. In the wild, those false "eyes" may ward off predators who would sneak up from behind.

-As an apex predator tigers are a keystone species. They help keep balance in their ecosystems.

My Favorite Wild Cats

Servals

My Favorite Wild Cats

-Servals live by grassy streams and rivers in South African Savannas.

-They are crepuscular (active during twilight) to avoid the heat of the day.

-Leopards, wild hogs, and hyenas are threats to servals.

-Servals use their huge ears to track (by sound) and hunt their prey.

-The serval feeds on birds, frogs, reptiles, crabs, and large insects.

-When standing on it's hind legs, a serval can jump 9ft straight up and snatch a bird out of the air.

-They are mostly solitary but may occasionally gather to rest.

-Male kittens are sent on their way at about 6 months of age while female offspring are tolerated up until 2yrs of age.
