I'm not sure why but I've always had the knack for understanding my own dreams and sometimes others as well. I could have a very obscure dream and within minutes of waking up, I knew what my subconscious was trying to tell me. A family member of mine once had a dream showing her where an object was that she had lost weeks before. When she woke up, she was shocked to find the object was exactly where it was shown in her dream. It's incredible to see how powerful our subconscious is.

'd immediately understand so it uses millions of objects as symbols to represent your subconscious. Some things you wouldn't consider a representation of something other than it's usual form (e.g. a family member) so it's easy to miss the desired message of your dream. For example, a person you know well in your dream could be representing your own qualities that they also own or they're representing a situation/problem that you're having, that relates to them. One object can represent hundreds of things but understanding yourself and your worries whilst piecing together the meanings of the other symbolic symbols in your dreams can allow you to understand them.

Not all of our dreams have meaning which begs the question: Why do we have them? There are numerous theories as to why we dream including random neural impulses, memory encoding and threat simulation. You could say that nightmares are an example of threat simulation; your brains way of rehearsing your reactions to a perceived threat.

Everything you dream isn't made up no matter how crazy the dream is. Your subconscious only uses things that you have seen before and that includes the strangers in our dreams. We have all seen thousands, possibly millions of people in our lifetime and our brain uses those faces in our dreams, even if you have never spoken to that person before or only saw their face for a matter of seconds.

If you're reading this and thinking, "I don't ever dream", it's probably because we all forget 90% of our dreams. We can wake up believing we didn't dream at all when actually we did, we just didn't remember it because it may not have had any particular meaning. It is very rare for someone to have never dreamt in their lifetime or is unable to do so and is often considered a psyhological disorder.

Wondering what the objects in your dream mean? There are a variety of dream dictionaries online which tell you what objects represent what.
